Well heck, Fluval stratum is very abundent in the US unlike other brands which have not largely ventured across the ponds!

My experience, was not good with FSS. I change it to black lava soil, and now I have lots of shrimplets. CRS will survive, but the shrimplets no.

Maybe Fluval Stratum is inconsistent? Some people can't get babies to survive. However...some people's CRS breed like crazy in Stratum. This girl started with like 5 CRS look at her shrimp density towards the end of the journal.

Hi, I would like to add to this topic aswell, I got the fluval ebi as a gift around christmas (1 year ago) and set it up with the fluval stratum, plants (cripto, anubias super nana & super super nana) and moss (java, tawaines), plus some marimo balls. Placed around 20 shrimps in the tank about 10 months ago and some females got berried, even had some shrimplets, but i think only one or two made it to adolescent stage.
The adult population slowly declined for no appearant reason, my nitrite, nitrate, hardness was fine, temp is fine, co2 is fine (not too much) ph is around 6.5 and i even bought a copper test to make sure it wasnt that that was slowly killing my population.
no fishes in the tank either.
Right now, the only possible problem source i can think of would be the fluval stratum.

my only thing is i dont need any where near 20 + lbs of it. i got 4 lbs of stratum and only used part of it

I strongly agree with this.
A shrimp losing it's color, can be due to all sorts of origins. Water parameters, stress, feromones, even background colors in your tank can play a role.
In my opinion, the only thing FSS does, is buffer the PH of the water to adjust it to preferred PH levels.... For example, in my 20 ltr tank the PH is 6.8 and in my 15 ltr tank the PH is 6.2. The slight difference is i.m.o due to the difference in water volume, substrate thickness and other biological factors.
That's it... It does nothing more.
FSS is clay pellets wrapped in organic material. Just like Ebi-gold, etc. etc.etc......
I have been using it for 3,5 months now. And I am still very happy with it. My plants are doing more than great. My water quality is excellent. And my shrimp are doing well.
And, I can confirm out of personal experience, that I have had shrimplets succesfully grow and mature and surviving in my 20 liter tank with FSS.
It's just a matter of what works for you and your shrimp. As I have said many times regarding this subject, don't go blind on these things. Try substrates, and find out what works for you and stick with it.
I.m.o. if it works, why change it?
Goodluck with your choices, and take care!

well so far the fluval shrimp stratum test is doing well i put a couple little baby (new born) oebt in the tank when i moved over some of the adults and blue rili and a couple weeks later i still have both in there. although they have not grown nearly as fast as the main tank of oebt they are still alive and growing so its a plus they live
