Default When will it be safe for me to do a water change?

My female Crystal Black let her shrimplets out 4 days ago. I read somewhere that I should not test or do a partial water change until at least a week or two, and with my number of inhabitants being so low (only two adults) I am a bit worried to mess with the water due to contamination and such.

    Chief,
I do water changes immediately with no concern. I don't even do it slowly. I do recommend, however, to not let the suction tube near the gravel because that is where the new shrimp will concentrate. Just keep the suction tube in mid water.

For me, I will fill jugs of filtered tap water and let them sit for a few days before I use it for the aquarium. Letting it sit and age gives it time to de-chlorinate.

A lot of cities use chloramine now which doesn't evaporate, hence why they use it and means you have to use something like Prime to treat the water. Unless you know what your city uses, you can't know for sure.

    Exactly GeToChKn!
Personally, what I do is fill a five gallon bucket with city water and I use 15 drops of Prime to each 5 gallon bucket. I usually try to let it sit for a few mins, and sometimes over night. Some people definitely overdose Prime and I have seen people lose a tank full of fish when this is done. I am actually overdosing, but within the prescribed limits on bottle. It says something to the effect of can be used up to 3x strength. At one drop per gallon I upped it to 3 drops per gallon. I actually use the smallest sized bottle because it has a dropper top and then buy the very large bottles and simply refill. works well. I have had very little trouble with this method until very recently but I suspect that the local city water increased the ppm of the chemicals chlorine/chloramine because we are having heavy rains and horrible flooding. The tap water now smells like an indoor swimming pool. I lost 5 shrimp this week! I may have to up my Prime dose...I am going to try and do some data collection.

Summit, that's the problem with tap water sometimes, they can change it throughout the year. If you live near an agricultural area, you are going to get nitrate runoffs into your tap water, and if you live in an area that is very seasonal, that may only be a problem for certain months of the year. You test your tap water in the winter, no nitrates. Keep filling throughout the summer and don't realize you dumping more nitrates into your water than you're trying to take out. Warmer areas with year around growing, you'll get it all year around. Flood happens, bad bacteria or algae blooms in source water during summer months, they add more crap. Some company does more dumping, etc. It's always hard to tell. For my crystals and tigers, I use RO water. For my neo's, they get tap water.
