Alot would have to do with the type of moss you choose. What type of moss are you dealing with?

Hard to tell, I would guess that it was Christmas moss (well that's how it looks growing in my tanks) where I begged it from, it was growing as a dense cushion, but the tank had a CO2 system going, very bright lighting and a horde of Amano Shrimp. The moss has never grown like that for me!

For the most part it just takes time. Keep trimming it when it grows up too much and it will eventually fill in thicker. High light and Co2 help this happen fast though.

To achieve a healthier, more robust look for moss, CO2 is required in my experience. You do NOT need highlight, in fact, I would advise against it. High light will just lead to more problems. Keep lighting low to medium and very simple. Add a small trickle of CO2 into your tank and work from there. All plants, including moss, will respond well with CO2 injection. You will notice a big difference in growth pattern and density of the plant.

    Good luck!
