    Default importance of Oxygen?

    Hello!

Im starting to become more and more curious about the importance of oxygen. I never injected o2 before because I figured its a shrimp tank and perhaps I dont need to. Also because Ive heard that the bubblers will flush the co2 out of the water, which I inject for the plants.

How important is O2 for shrimps? Can you run O2 and Co2 at the same time effectively? Is it true that plants need O2 at night? Ive heard that O2 is needed to grow good bacterial colonies in the substrate, true? Do any of you inject O2, or both Co2 and O2?

    Thanks!

if you on planted tank and keeping shrimp at the same time, it is adviseable to keep o2 on while co2 off. becuase at day, plant perform photosintesis to make food and it required co2 and will discharge o2. but when at night, both plant, fish, shrimp, they all need o2 and this is why o2 injection is adviseable. bacteria also using o2 and when something goes wrong with bacteria, it will consume a lot o2 and there's no o2 for fish and shrimp.

As long as you have good surface agitation to facilitate O2 exchange with the open air, you don't need to inject oxygen. Some people run airstones at night as a precaution.

Its funny i should find this thread as i am currently doing some o2 experiments.

I setup 2 identical tanks, the only difference was oxygen content. In the tank with high oxygen levels i noticed lower nitrates, fewer deaths and higher breeding levels.

I am now looking into whether the higher breeding rate was a result of lower nitrates or higher o2.

But yes, from my recent experiments i would say o2 is very important.
When i die make sure my wife sells my shrimp for what they are worth, not what i told her they are worth.

Care to share your methods ?

I am very interested in this also, because i have notice since i added a large sponge filter to my crs tank i am getting more babies ...

Bacterial,O2,circulation,less nitrates could be anything but what ever it is its working for me

My crs seems to be much more active when I leave the air stone in at night for a few hours but the problem with me is my pH just keeps rising and rising. Anyone know how long to leave the air stone on at night? I'm not running any co2 in day time, have surface agitation from the spray bar. Is that enough o2 for the 60 liter tank?

maybe you can try for about 3 hours first and then check your ph.

Ya I will try that. I will see whats the change in ph every hour for 3 hours. Don't want the ph to rise too much. Cheers
