Spiky moss? :D

alien07 5th Dec 2005 03:37 PM

Really? Its very nice? :)

NanoDave 5th Dec 2005 04:07 PM

I think any moss, after it grows denser and denser, will be simply beautiful. Even java moss! :)

Hi,
I kept more than a dozen species of mosses and liverworts but only a few of them will stay in my tanks. Among the mosses I prefer Weeping moss and Singapore moss. Among the liverworts I like the seaweed-like liverwort ("Süßwassertang") and Riccia fluitans var. 'mini' (the thalli are only 4-5mm long before they start to branch and they do this under all conditions). Monosolenium tenerum is too large for my taste and "mini pelia" (probably Riccardia sp.) is too fragile and tiny.

regards
Robert

I recommend Spiky moss too. Look at NA's display tank with CRS. Woo!

dom 6th Dec 2005 04:15 AM

For me, any moss will do. Once you can have a very healthy moss. And you will have very healthy shrimp. My java moss growing like xmas moss in triangle shape.

If you are a mosses collector, you can hav w1 tank with a type of moss. So that, that is easier for you to verify and can have the show tank. I am mixing all kind of mosses and liverworts into a tank. Can't have the show tank but it is the heaven for shrimp. :D

kross 8th Dec 2005 02:26 PM

I'm not sure what moss this is but it sure catches my attention. Gonna "farm" them! :D

Go out and find some in the wild yourself. If they grow sucessfully, you'll be more than just visually satisfied. And wild emersed mosses have that "suprise" factor which can be very exciting ! :D

dom 9th Dec 2005 01:38 AM

Kross,

That is fissiden sp. Slow grow. But hardy plant.

Cheers,
dom

The lowly java moss..

retardo 10th Dec 2005 09:20 PM

kross,

May I ask where you collected those moss specimens? Are they terrestrial mosses you are attempting to grow immersed? How long have you had the specimens?

I recently went to Yosemite Nat'l Park and collected two small specimens of terrestrial mosses and am currently keeping them immersed in a small container, hoping it will take off under water like it does out of water. One of them I'm almost sure is a fissidens species. The other looks like cladaphora (aka, mossball).

Thanks,

rich

Recently, a shop here start to sell so-called star pellia or star moss, well, the shop can't decide it is a moss or a liverwort, different name is called at different time. :D

That should be the Plagiomnium sp. Mostly growing emersed in wild. i had tried to grow emersed. They need strong lighting n co2 to survive. Able to grow a bit in months. But some friends said it is not the aquatic moss.

Rich,
I bought some fonds from a LFS here just to start off farming... :D Had them for about a month. Not sure if it's true but the LFS owner says it's from the States which is where you're from. :) Post a photo of your collection.

Cheers....

I've tried to take some pics using my sister's digicam, but there isn't a macro mode to speak of, so it always comes out blurry, unfortunately. I think it's time for me to get one of my own with a superb macro feature. I will post pics when that occurs. :D

Nice looking Fissidens there, Kross.

Growing some out currently. Had a meltdown with the little piece of mine, but it's slowly recovering.

This moss is found emersed in drier areas. They can grow in water but it will change to elongated shape after weeks like stringy moss. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I have collected and planted some of them in my tank

the current batch will stay as it is. And the new grow will coming out in between. Just the same shape with emersed type. But lighter green.

I think all mosses look good when they are thick and well established. I have always liked Christmas moss.

evolim83 1st Apr 2006 06:25 PM

My favorite moss would be Spiky Moss!
Alot cheaper now, as compared to a few months ago!
And its a rather easy moss!

I love Taiwan Moss, the way they grow so neatly by layers attracts me.

betta_zoid87 3rd Apr 2006 05:50 AM

taiwan and christmas moss are nice to me....

Frank 3rd Apr 2006 05:50 PM

Normally I´m crazy about mosses I don´t have.
The fissidens fontanus is looking very nice.

From the mosses I have I prefer peacock actually.
Spiky moss is also great. Don´t forget the willow moss.
Eh, better stop here :D

I can post some pics when they are grown a bit.
I hope the weeping moss is healthy, doesn´t look very good.

Hi everybody
i'm a new members.
For fist, excuse me for my average English :undecided .

Can I have some informations about this beautiful "moss".

origine?
temperature?
pH?
CO2 or not?
light?

Thanks for all, and I really sorry if this question is not in a good place :embarasse

yong foo 23rd Apr 2006 04:44 AM

Hi arctus,
Not sure where it originated, but it is first found in USA.
I grow them in temp range from 25-27 deg C.
CO2 is recommended.
As for PH, KH and light, this plant seems not particular on these, it is consider an easy plant but grow very slowly. From tie up to the wire mesh till the grew out condition of my picture took me more than 6 weeks. That's why it is still quite expensive in Singapore. I like to use it to create a lawn effect of my tank foreground.

Hope the above helps. :)

Regards
Chan
