View Full Version : CRS killed by mesh

I have about 30 CRs in my tank. Noticed that they are getting lesser and lesser with no dead CRS found. today when I removed my moss wall  , I found 5 dead CRS... 2 at the back wall and the remaining 3 at each side of the walls. Aparently, the CRS had got themselves trapped between the moss wall and the tank... posted this thread to prevent it from happening to other CRS lovers ....
As attached is the mash that I am using

Did you double sheet the mesh??
Looks like it in the picture.

What is cell dimensions? I have no problems with that. Cells approx. 3mm diagonally.

What some people did before was to staple the moss onto styrofoam sheets, then silicone it onto the tank wall. What I did before was to cut slots into very porous biofoam, squeeze the moss inside, then attach the biofoam onto the walls. My moss grew alright, but it never attached itself very strongly to the biofoam.

These sorts of mesh are usually mad of PP (Polypropylene), so no risk for shrimps when there are no other materials. When the mesh would be poison for shrimps they all would be ill.
I cannot believe that a shrimp is not able to get out of a mosswall when it was able to get in. Also there is enough food between the plants.
For example I allways have some cherry shrimps in my filter (Eheim 2028), I think they come through the outgoing water and they are still OK when i let them back in the tank.
IMO the shrimps died of another reason. Usually they are trying to hide when they are near dead.
I have had a similar problem some weeks ago while my filter has got a malfunction. Some shrimps were laying dead behind driftwood and the others were near the surface.

Is it because the moss is too thick?

Yah I used two mash to clam the moss between them. At first I didnt have the problem as the moss is not as thick, but when the moss got thicker, the shrimps started to have difficult coming out after getting in. The mash size is about 1cm per square. Now I have removed all the mash in my tank and if I would like to have a moss wall probably I will be using the foam method. If you have a mash wall, maybe you should take it out to check if there are any dead shrimps... I hope not

I dont think that have come through the out going water as I cherry shrimps have enough strenght to swim aganist the current of the outgoing flow of your filter. That is unless the flow of your filter is set very low. They have probably entered the filter through the suction part of the filter. Maybe you can try using a sponge to cover the suction part, this will prevent the shrimps from being sucked into the filter. You will be surprise that the can live in the filter for quite some time without dieing considering that they are not fed directly... :)

I suspect that the mesh is not the reason for your crs loss. The mess merely captured the dying crs.
I think the culprit is your water quality. What's your nitrate level?

Sure I´m using spongefilter for incoming water. Therefor I´m thinking they are coming through the outgoing water.
With the spongefilter I also don´t have to clean the mainfilter so often. It´s a little bit oversized for 300-liter-tank. So every 1/4 to 1/2 year I can collect about 50 healthy red cherrys lol

Thats strange. I don't know what filter you exactly have. But every filter I saw, had rotor which make water flow. Shrimps cant go throght it, unless they are mixed to food for others. I thing shrimps can't get in this way.
Only way is "be sucked" in via sponge. how big "holes" has it? Can't hatched shrimps go through and then grow in canister, can they?

Don´t know how to say how big the holes are.
Would say not big enough for them to go through.
I´m also wondering how that can happen.
I use 2 sponge pads so normally not much chance for the shrimps.
While I´m cleaning one the other one is protecting.
(BTW: Eheim 2028)

2028, that is quite strong flow. There is also no chance to get in via outlet and don't go through rotor. Secondly, how srimps can get through filter filling? ( If you find them under baskets at the bottom reservoir).
They have to go through inlet pipe.
How dense foam is? I now grading 10,20,30,45.
:D There is one more (two) way. You are somnambulant or UFO put it in :D
