View Full Version : Snake-Cemetery - what shall I do?

Hello,

I've set up a small tank month ago filled with 6 liter, some gravel, Hemianthus callitrichoides, Vesicularia dubyana, Lemna minor, Cabomba aquatica, Monosolenium tenerum and Riccia fluitans.
I didn't istall any technic except a light tube.

The tank is occupied (in the non-microscopic range, pure-eye-visibility) by: Physa marmorata, some Planorbidea and Asellus aquaticus.

Wateranalysis: pH 7,2; KH 3; GH 7; NO3/NO2 not detectable (Tetra Test-Sticks)
Waterchange: Once a week, 0,5 liter.
All plants are growing and snails and woodlouses are in good health, reproducing themselves.

But why die any other creatures than the named ones? I tried several Melanoides tuberculata, one Apple-Snail and Crystal Reds as well.
All of them are in heaven now...

But why?

Where is the mistake?

Helpless remains:

Have you a LOT of plants in the tank? They give off carbon dioxide and use oxygen at night, and my have killed the more sensitive animals?
This happened to me in a small fish pond, the weed grew too well and one warm summer night ... Half fish dead!
Just a thought from my bad experiece.

I agree.
The water needs movement for oxygen (minimum is air flow, a filter would be better)

@ shrimpo: Yes, its a green hell...
@ Frank:
movement for oxygenOkay... I understand...
But which pump would be small enough to be used in a 6 liter tank?
Is it possible to throttle them down to this size?
And would be pumping at night (meanwhile photosynthesis won't produce any oxygen) be enough?
Will a circulating pump (no exhauster) be helpful?
It should be a very silent solution otherwise I am disabled to work/sleep...

Still helpless remains:

PS: Any technical device is welcome...

Small air flow pumps are not so silent.
I use the smallest one from tetra in a 10l tank with the middle sponge filter from tetra. I wonīt use the smallest, bur for 6l it will be OK.
I do not care about the noise because itīs not in my living room. :p
