Dear veterans,

Am exploring a simple setup for Sulawesi shrimps (probably Cardinals) in a 1 foot cube, and considering which type of filter to use. May I consult with those who have experience with keeping Sulawesi shrimps in a tank of similar size? I'm thinking of using the Eheim Liberty hang-on-top filters, wonder if this is okay~ or would an internal filtration system be preferable?

Appreciate your comments please, thanks!

Hi,

I use eheim classic 2211 with ugf for my 30x30x30cm tank...

A air-sponge with additionally canister filter would be my choice, as it keeps pH high and give shrimplets the possibility to feed on the sponge. The canister volume will grant a good, sufficient filtration. However, successfull keepers in my country also use HMF (Mattenfilter) with good results, too.

The eheim hang-on-top should be fine as long as you have a sponge covering the intake to prevent the cardinals from being sucked into the filter. IME, they don't require much filtration and they dislike swift current.

I am having pretty good results with undergravel filter. My past tanks used sponge filters, which worked well also. Good luck!

I use sponge - canisterfilter - RUGF. Works like a charm and have very little maintenance in this tank.

Thanks folks for your suggestions! Will probably try the Eheim - will take note of the inlet as well as the speed of water flow. :)

Hi,

May I know what is the flow rate needed for 1ft tank?
Is 150L/hr sufficient or higher needed as I read that the shrimps don't like fast flowing current?
