Hello,

my shrimps (Opae ula / Hawaiian Red Shrimp) live in brackish water in a 25 litres tank which contains loads of dark lava rocks. The specific density is about 1,012.
I used a sponge filter, but I changed it to an Eheim filter because of the noise. The intake of the filter is covered with a sponge, so the little shrimps will not be sucked and harmed by the filter.

This is the tank. It doesn't look spectacular, but the shrimps like it. :)

I really like these shrimp ....
What type of water parameters do you keep them in ?
And whats the clear pipe at the front for ? snail trap ?

Thanks for sharing :)

Hello Mark,

the clear pipe was a bristleworm trap. The bright stone was a life stone which contained bristleworms. They are gone now, but I forgot to remove the pipe... I will do it now. *being ashamed*

Actually I don't know the water parameters. I use tapwater and put some water conditioner to it, to remove the chlorine and copper. The only parameter I'm looking for is the salinity which has a secific density of 1,012.
Evaporated water is filled up with fresh. Important is to do it slowly, so they can adjust. If the water parameters change suddenly, they can die. Apart from that they are very robust.

This sounds very barbaric, but actually I care for the tank rather little. The less you do, the more comfortable feel the shrimps.
When I started with the shrimps, I did a lot like cleaning the tank, change water, remove algaes from the pane etc. and I saw less and less of the shrimps. Then I risked it and tried out what happend if I do nothing or just a little and suddenly the shrimps became active and increased.

It's realy easy to keep them. Sometimes I think it is too easy and this is why people have problems holding/breeding them.

Well, as you said, sometimes it is better to keep hands off the tank LOL Thanks for your report on your tank :) I know that many guys in Germany are looking for the rubra, but only few people keep and breed them. Do you have different variations on red?

Yes, they vary from deep red to pale pink, but every single shrimp can have that color range :D
I think it depends on how they feel and when they moult. At the moment my shrimps are mostly red and I have more than 10 females carrying eggs. *WUHUUUU!* So, if anybody needs Hawaiian Red Shrimps ;)

I'm going to buy a little tank today (about 3 litres), because I get 6 new shrimps which do not descend from mine. This is realy cool!

Interesting! I have seen these shrimps for sale... just don't have enough tanks to try them all.
