I have a 15 litre shrimp tank with a small hang-on filter and no CO2.
In it is filled with all Java Moss and about 20 Cherry shrimps.
What I cannot understand is the PH in this tank refused to be lowered.
My tap water is around 8.2-8.3. I introduced peat into the tank but the PH did not lower but keeps going up. I added Sodium Bicarbonate to prevent PH from going up further. Anyone understand what is causing the high PH level ?
Thanks

Use of Sodium Bicarbonate will drive PH upwards to 8.2. It is the Sodium Bicarbonate prevents your peat from lowering the PH.
Do not use Sodium Bicarbonate, peat will lower the PH down.

If your tank with gravel, try to use the ADA soil which might help a bit to lower down the PH. Beside the peat, you can use the indian almond leaf (Ketapang leaf) to lower down the PH. But peat n ketapang leaf will give you the black water.

I do not have any soil in the tank.
The filter only have 2 layers of filter material.
I thought Sodium Bicarbonate can increase the KH and prevent PH from going up and down.

theres no nid to add the sodium bicarbonate bro. i had high ph like u last time too, i didnt use peat cause i didnt want my water to become blackish.. so i got some advice from a friend n he asked me to use ADA soil. i put a handful in my filter and it worked, my ph dropped from 7.6 to 6.5.
:) hope it helps.
