I am after a little guidance from you budding photographers (hint hint Koji ;))
I am pretty useless at taking photos, only had a decent camera a matter of weeks. I have just invested in a macro lense and am having great difficulty focusing on the shrimp, portraits, landscapes etc are fine, its just when focusing on the little critters.
Any suggestions on how i can get a decent shot? should i be using a tripod?
Thanks in advance

Yes, it would be fine a little guidance (hint-hint koji :D )
I've recently changed my camera, and now I'm able to take pictures like this (it takes a lot of time and patience, because it's a compact and it has "auto-focus"; what I do to focus were I want is just to press the button again or change camera psoition)
It's the full picture (it's very close to the front glass)

and a little closer:

hello fento, great shots you have there, may i ask which cam body & micro lens combo are you using?

There's no combo, it's a simple compact :nice: but it can focus from 1cm, so if you have patience and feed shrimps close to the glass, you can take pictures like this (and with enough resolution to allow "zooming and cutting" image, to show beter details, as you can see at 2nd picture, it's 1st magnified). The camera has it's vantages and disadvantages, but in my opinion it's quite good for shrimpshots -and aceptable for daily use- (but not really that good to take full-body or groupal shrimp pictures, because it just focus on the detail). Well, this is the camera: http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/27923/olympus-vr310/
And I got an offer from a local store for 110€, so is another considerable option before getting bridge or reflex cameras, because of it's simplicity, little size and low cost.

Sorry if I reply late for I missed this thread...:embarasse
Ok this is the equipment which I used for my picture taking of the critters.
Canon EOS 550D with basic lens 18-55mm reversed
With flash thus my shutter speed is faster and more sharp

And randomly these are without flash. Shutter speed is slower but more difficult to capture sharper picture

I would prefer to take without flash for the colour will look more natural imho.:)

I can't understand how Koji can take those amazing shots only with a reversed 18-55!!!
Koji do you have any reversed adapter?
I also use strobist gear to shoot the shrimps but since i don't have a macro lens I'm using a manual close up carl zeiss jena Flecktogon 2.4 from the 70's
