Hi guys,

I reckon many of you are familiar with using chillers in your tank setup. Hence, I was hoping to find out if anyone actually came across a small chiller for a 50x29x29 (42L) tank and have been able to use it in their bedrooms.

I know the Hailea 100A is a decent chiller. However, it seems like its too noisy for a bedroom setting and has been likened to the compressor on an airbrushing machine.

So, anyone knows of a silent unit? Perhaps another model? Or brand? My usual water temp hovers around 27-28deg.

Thanks!

Teco or artica but frankly if is a compressor unit and u are placing in the bedroom it will still be noisy. Like those commercial Air-con unit for human use. Alot of brands have claim that it is silent during the run well guess what when the problem of noise is feedback to them they will tell u this "Oh what we meant is the Fancoil not the compressor" Cause why i know i've install quite alot of brands already. I've a resun 280 and hailea 28A in the mid of night where my family are all zzzz. I sit in the living room and compare they are noisy like a humming sound when they cut in. I m not too sure for teco and artica brand but if u going to put in bedroom no matter what it is going to have a humming sound when it cut in.

Yea. Its a huge problem for me. I can live with a relatively quiet humming sound throughout the night but I'm worried about how loud the humming really is. It might just be too unbearable for a bedroom setup.

confrim unbearable relatively the hailea will behave quieter but u will be awaken by the sudden cut in and out trust me it is not meant for bedroom. Unless you room is air-con mean during the night when u have aircon on u shut down your chiller. If not u going to face another issue heat contribution to your room.

I'm using Hailea 150A in a bedroom, it's efficient and will hardly noticed it's there..

Though it's kinda overpowered for your tank, do understand this (especially if cost is no concern)

A bigger horsepower chiller will be more efficient and lasting. It will cool down fast after kicked in to your set desired temp, hence less 'cooling' time = quieter (cooling time will also be constituted by the flow rate of ur canister / powerhead). it will also 'hold temp better and longer. Therefore, overall performance; kick in less a day & cuts off faster after kick in(also save electric bill in long run).
E.g. at night when my aircon(temp set @ 25degrees) is on, my chiller normally only kick in at most 1 time throughout the night, on cooler nights, not even once at times.
During the day, kick in +/- 5-6 times.

A bigger chiller casing will also have more space and a bigger fan in it, enhancing efficiency & lifespan. Small chillers kick in more frequently and after kick in, runs longer time, heat builds up fast in the chiller, making it harder to chill, over time, nosier and eventually the compressor / fan will die on you..

Basically, smaller = runs longer (noisy) = more frequent kick in = more electricity = shorter lifespan.

When my chiller kicks in, I dont even notice so, unless I am sitting in front of my tank. In fact, in comparison, my timer is louder when it kicked in.. lol

Currently in my bedroom (going for 3 chillers) im using the Hailea 130A for my 2ft tank, set to 23 degrees celcius and i must say its super noisy! But had since made done little modifications to reduce the vibrations and its pretty quite now. However i'd still prefer Teco or Artica.

Regarding the Hailea 150A for your tank size, i believe it's slightly overpowered but its all good! Like what was explained in earlier posts. I wld go for slightly bigger.

i'm also using the hailea chiller, i guess the noise is subjective & relative to your room acoustics, my place is dead quiet at night and the humming noise when the chiller kicks in is quite annoying initially, but after i've added isolation rubber pads under the chiller and after living with it for months, the noise is lesser.

Hey elements! Yeap that combo with 2213 would be good.. In my opinion the flow rate is just right. Abt the noise level, are you keeping it in a cabinet? Although i wldnt recommend to... Had spoken to the importer of hailea equipment here in s'pore abt this issue and he said that 150A and above would have a quiet operation because its bigger and the 100 and 130 models would make a lot of noise. So im stuck with that.. Im really not sure how true it is but im waiting for my hailea 28A to come next week and find out.

Its near my office, so i decided to dropby to check out. Very nice moss they have there...
One of the uncles, is tying up some moss and it cost $10buck for one mesh(abt 8x8 cm)..hee
Those that already growing very nice in their chilled tank cost $30~50 bucks...wahhhhhhhhhh...anyway nice ones.
Do you know where to get nicely tied moss to driftwoods or rocks at a reasonable price?
If its not convi to address here, i would appreciate PMs.

Wow... Haha im a sucker for moss on driftwood! Haha... I should definitely go down to check it out! Hmmm.... I havent really seen anything around here that really caught my attention though... But will PM you a place where i think its worth to check out... I do need at least 2 to 3 pcs of such for my CRS tank.. And more when i set up my neocaridina and sulawesi tank :) however if i may suggest to try and experiment to tie the moss yourself... Its really fun and satisfying! But sometimes a headache.. Hehe

Hi elements,
apologise for the slow reply, been busy with work. Anyway, 150A is more than sufficient for 2ft, it is ideal actually..
anything smaller would not be efficient in long run. go for it. buying from yishun aquastar gives a 6 month warranty, anything wrong, they send the service people to your house (hassle free). not sure about elsewhere.

hopes it helps =]

should have read this thread before getting the 100a ... too noisy!!!!
perhaps the 150a is a better choice

appreciate if can share on how to dampen the noise of the 100a. Thanks!

is the 150a quiet enough for the bedroom ... soft low humming is acceptable
100a when not kick-in is rather quiet.... how much louder is 150a compare to that when kick-in?

Wow. Revived my old thread. Haha.

Anyway, you should note that the newer HS-28A model is alot quieter than the 100A. Never really compared with a 150A before, but I reckon you'll be better off with the the newer model. This being said, the recommendation is based on price. If you should be able to afford one, get an Artica. I believe many people have already posted on its power efficiency and low noise output. Slightly cheaper is the Teco brand of chillers. The aforementioned 2 brands should (and I stress should because I have never personally tried them. all based on reading forums.) be quieter than the comparatively cheaper Resuns and Haileas.

Arctica is quite quiet, however, any equipment used for sometime will produce some noise for sure.
China brands tend to be much noiser and they kickin temperature difference is not prefer for my usage.
