fissidens moss are the latest craze in the mossy scene.... and they are rather commonly found in some parts of North America, i think.
Dom has got some Malaysian fissidens species.

Actually, fissiden moss are quite easy to find here unlike certain kind of mosses. Just go to any of the numerous waterfalls and chances are, you'll find them on the rocks by the side of the falls. In fact, you'll find some kind of "mini pelia" too if you look hard enough. I happen to find one that resembles elongated fish skeleton some time back.

Cheers,

KG

Nano,
If you are there, then you will find out it is not easy to scratch off the fissiden from the rocks. 2cmx2cm can be a lot. 20cm x 20cm is kinda heavy if attached with soil and you are carrying some other stuff.
And we can't take all of them out from the wild. We need to let some of them to grow...otherwise, we need it in future and can't get.

Kenny,
yr fissiden....waiting for Marge to bring back. :D :joking:

there is a lot more in the wild. These plants are like weeds in the right condition. If they have a foothold there, the limited amount you found is only the tip of the iceberg.

Actually i went got jungle tracking, netting or plants collecting every month. At least once a month, but i make sure i will just take enough for myself and the universities/labs.

See...this is not just an iceberg. (Pictures taken by a member from Johor.)

I recently got some Fissidens, not sure if Malaysian or not. It grows in erect stems, straight up. Its a very pretty light green color. I used a sharp tool to wedge it into nooks and crannies of a piece of African driftwood (too hard, really, if I were to do over, I'd use a softer driftwood). It is growing slowly, and a bit thinner, more delicate looking in my tank. It does catch debris. I'm still waiting for it to take "hold" on the driftwood. I may try some on a different, softer driftwood which it might colonize more easily. Currently, it is in a tank with Bumblebee shrimp, which will take food out of it, but not "clean" it well.
