I have a friend using air-con compressor to drop the temp and controlling by the timer. It can drop to 18C..And he used the titanium...

Btw, i saw this DIY chiller with the copper using at the compressor. And need to check out the wiring and plumbing are made by chopper as well?

Is DIY cheaper or more efficient compared to commercial brands?

DIY chiller is definitely cheaper than the commecial type. 2nd hand air-con or fridge compressor is below S$100. (It is around RM80-150 in Kuala Lumpur/Petaling Jaya - Malaysia)

But remember, it is just something like a fridge or aircon. You gonna pay like extra S$40-80 extra in yr electric bill.

Btw, i am using Resun CL650. Noisy like an air-con or fridge. Electric bill increase RM70+ per month.

the chiller cost is one thing, the monthly electric bill is add on!!! like this, i rather keep the tank in a air con room. i get the air-con, the tank also gets the air-con .... muahhahahahah :D

What is the HP of CL650? It seems the series has very high HP to power comsumption ratio.

if i am not mistaken it is either 1/4 or 1/2 of HP. This china made chiller is well famous with noisy and high electric consumption. Friend using a German brand named Teco. He said that is quiet and electricity is low as well.

Yeah, my neighbour is using Teco & didn't get much increase in electricity bill. It is set at 25.5C & kick off around every 50 minutes for 15 minutes each time(2 feet tank). Very quiet chiller but pricey. Tempted to get one for myself :D. Maybe will start with DIY TEM chiller because too poor to own a Teco.

Hi all,
Real chillers are really expensive most of the time $1000 and up for good ones. DIY chilling is an often discussed problem on reef aquaria forums and it's very, very hard to do. There is one design called eco-chiller that uses evaporation but all evaporative chillers can only be used where the dew points is a few degrees below the target temp of the tank. DIY cooling towers that shower the tank water down into a bucket against a flow of air are the most effective evaporative chillers. Also quite cheap.
