Spiky moss? I have never heard of them, this moss i got it from a friend and he doesn't know what type of moss it is also. It grows flat in a non injected co2 tank which is really interesting as some of my moss tends to grow towards the light like my weeping moss who became like flame moss lol. Thank you for your comment about my shrimps.

Some bought from a friend that has beautiful collection of shrimps here. Couple brought back by a friend from asia as he visits there every year(won from bidding). Others from selective breeding, i have a new tank that i set-up last week and it is a 33g long tank. This tank will only be high grade cbs tank(doing selective breeding). I really want BKK/panda that my friend is breeding but the prices are very high right now so maybe wait a little bit more.

Enjoy,

You should pat yourself on the back Stephen, as your graded shrimp SS + are very good as are your planted scapes.
Can you confirm if you are infusing C02 in your tanks and a list of the plants...I love keeping shrimp in planted tanks and have just taken delivery of some Germen bred SS...Lets hope they acclimatise ok and enjoy their new nano cube environment.
Thx for the pics...:)

Do you remove the better grades as the appear to another tank to breed on?

Hi Anubia,
First, i want to say thank you for appreciating my humble tank/s and shrimps. We have something in common as i love planted tank with shrimps on it. Although lately i have less time for a planted tank because of work but i still find a time to have a couple of tanks planted for my shrimps. Only problem i have with a heavily planted tank is selective breeding, it is very hard to find some of the shrimps let alone catching them without uprooting some of the plants. Regarding this particular tank that i posted, yes it is 24/7 co2 injected tank(1bubble per few seconds).
Here are some of the list of the plants:
HC - Hemianthus callitrichoides
Mermaid Weed - Proserpinaca palustris
Mini pellia
Blyxa Japonica
Weeping Moss
Downoi - Pogostemon helferi
Fissiden Fontanus
Erio
I hope i answered all your questions.
Best regards,
Stephen

Thank you Amanda, to answer your question, yes i do remove the shrimps that i don't like from the group and add new shrimps from my other tanks which i think has very solid and thick white on them. I also keep the best pattern to breed, also noticed patterns are carried from males mostly rather than females. Take my experience for example, in first generation i used a female that is not crown but has nice thick solid white and males are all crowns. Most of the babies as you can see are very thick white and more than 70% of off springs are crowns. Hope this helps in any way.
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi Stephen ...I thought your plants were too good as to not to have C02....Nice list of plants..!!!
Totally agree with the 'catching' problem and selective breeding. It is a nightmare to catch the actual shrimp you want..!!
Fissidens fontanus is a lovely moss which is difficult to come by in the UK whereas the US & Canada seems to have it by the bucket load. Again many thx for the pics and stunning shrimp & planted aquascape.

I have few tanks and filtration varies from cannister & cannister+UGF. If you are asking about the intake, i hook up the cannister intake into a UGF and my other tanks i use sponge filter perfectly fitted to my cannister intake. Thank you for the kind words about my shrimps.

Thank you for your kind words, i tweak my co2 when i first set-up my tank. I remove my solenoid and run my co2 24/7 at a very low bubble rate per couple of seconds depending how big my tank is and how much my plants need. Balance is everything to do well both from shrimps & plants. If you have anymore questions let me know and i will try to answer them as much as i can.

NO, i don't aerate my planted tanks. I managed to balance just enough co2 needed for plants like HC to pearl and shrimps happy and breeding. To tell you the truth it took me almost a month to tweak everything when i started on this experiment. You have to understand running co2 24/7 is opposite to having any PH swings at all, i have tested this many time with or without light. PH will not swing if co2 is injected in the tank 24/7, balance is the key my friend.

I started dosing CO2 24/7 when the pH refused to come down even after using 100% RO water, Very True balance is the key, I have this running on my SSS Grade CRS Tank, Almost a month now, everything is ok.
One question though, Do you feel that Shrimps in Tanks with CO2 develop less thickness or the white detoriates over a period of time?
Do you dose CO2 in the tanks which have the SSS+ Grades as well?

Hi Stephen.....how many BPS do you run your 24/7 C02.....as I'm keen to experiment with a new nano high tech planted scape but want to balance the infused C02. Plants will be Anubia's, Blyxia, Staurogyne P, Posgotemon, HC and various mosses.
Any help will do or point be in the direction of a good forum write up pls... The BKK look stunning very much like your SS+ CRS...I think you are collating a very nice colony..
Happy breeding times ahead...and a few poly boxes with heat packs for me sometime in the future....LOL...

In my experience, co2 has nothing to do with whiteness or thickness for that matter. There are many factors and the biggest one is genetic(many more out there), lighting plays a big role also specially when they are young. I use MH in one of my grow out tanks and i can see a big difference. I have two tanks for SSS & SSS+ grade one is injected and one is not. I only inject co2 for the reason of plants nothing else. If i wanted to not have plants and just moss i will not inject co2 as i don't need it.

Hi Anubia, in my 10/20g i run about 1 bubble per 3 seconds to be exact. I haven't done nano but if i was to do it maybe go for 1 bubble per 5-6 seconds depending how much you need & how big is your nano tank(also WPG does not apply to 5g bellow). You just have to tweak it here and there, all you have to watch out for really is algae bloom. If you see algae are not thriving and kept at bay then you have accomplished something that many have failed my friend and that is optimum balance.
Thank you for your kind words about my humble shrimps. I hope i can breed them also, maybe in the near future i will also know how to ship shrimps.
Best regards,
Stephen

thanks for your help mananaP, i will try to dose co2 to my shrimp tank, what do you suggest i should do first?reason for trying to dose co2 is my fissiden and pelia turning brown and dying. What colour temperature light do you have on your shrimps? In your exp,do you think diff light colour temperature or intensity have diff effect on your shrimp colouration? i use 12000k t5Ho light on my shrrimps , doesnt show any difference to me :)

Others claim that light does help in regards to whiteness and thickness of crs shell. I personally use 10k both in my T5HO and MH and so far i can't complain. 12k is OK to me, 10/12k is brighter in our eyes than say 6.7k bulbs.
Dosing co2,It is really up to you if you want to try my method you are free to do so. First, how big is your tank, fissiden and mini pellia thrive even without co2 but would look better on a co2 injected tank and a cooler tank like 22-24c. If your tank ranges from 10-20g i would do a 1bubble per 3 seconds as i did to mine. Also my light is 3-3.5watts per gallon and my light fixture is about 4 inches above water surface, lights are on for 6 hours only. You also need to factor all of these for things to work as they should be, if one thing is off then you need to tweak the other stuff to balance out.

Hi!
Very nice setups and wonderfull srimps!
I also use co2 24/7 on a small tank (30l), 1 bubble per 3/4 seconds. In my case the purpose was to lower the ph, and it worked really well. It went from 7.2 to 6.6. And it allways stays there.
But what about ferts? Do you use any? what is your fertilization plan?
And you say you hook the intake of the cannister to the UGF. Don´t you think it might work better if you hooked the outtake (reverse ugf) and use a sponge filter in the intake (as you do in your only cannister tanks)? Don't you think the soil would be cleaner and with less chances to clog?
Sorry for all the questions...
Thanks!

Thanks, yes dosing co2 24/7 works great. No ferts in all my tanks allowed.
Reverse UGF is the new trend now and people says it works great. I'm still a bit old school and haven't encountered any problems yet thus i continue to use this method on my tanks. I can always switch it the other way around or maybe i can do it in my future set-up. I was thinking of doing sulawesi but never really had the time and space to look further on taking care of them. Also if it does clog, i just connect it as one of the air driven one and use a sponge on the intake of my cannister either way you can never go wrong and there is always a solution in every problem heheheh.

Stephen

Yeah, about the filtration, I think the same way. But I've been reading a lot on rugf and I´m really tempted on trying that on my next set-up.
I´m amazed how you can keep those plants with no ferts (HC, even blyxa...)...
What soil do you use?

Very, very nice collection. The aquascaping in the mid grade tank is top notch.
A couple questions:
1. What are your water parameters
2. What is your water change schedule
3. Why are you so adamant about not dosing ferts? I agree that supplemental nitrates and phosphates are unnecessary and potentially harmful in a shrimp tank, but IME potassium is essential for healthy growth under high lighting.
4. How thick is the substrate over the ugf panel

The Count

My water parameters are PH 6.6-6.8 / GH 4-5 / KH 0-1 / TDS range from 130-200 but mose of my tanks are the same on parameters except my TDS because sometimes i dump too much mineral plus LOL. I change my water once a week depending on my work schedule as i'm always tired after work and no time to change water. Sometimes i don't do water change for two weeks and shrimps are still fine. I don't dose because i don't know what my the ferts consist of(properties), also i have no experience on dosing so i best not true. My soil is about an inch and half over my UGF. I hope this answers all your questions.

If you have thick white on crs why mix it with snow white? If your goal is to have different patterns, for example you want more white on the body then yes you can use snow white but only in one or two generations. In this hobby it is hit or miss, maybe on first generation you don't succeed maybe the next you will. GL!

NP! Make a journal of your challenge maybe others might find this interesting and it is good for the hobby hehehehe. Also i want to tell you from the high grade cbs i have, first generation of crown SSS cbs x cbs = mostly sss grade cbs and a couple of snow white and when i'm talking about white this are very very white and solid. I separated them and when they grew up and in first generation i was surprised SW x SW = mostly SW but couple were high grade CBS lol.

In one simple line "TAKE OUT WHAT YOU DON'T LIKE, KEEP THE BEST OF THE BEST", that line works for me and i will keep doing it. Even with just a couple of male and female bro of the best crs/cbs you have in F1 or F2 or F3 you will notice they become nicer and nicer. I never had any extreme flower or extreme crown before but after F3 i found 2 crs with this characteristics, if i get more of the extreme i might separate them and hopefully get mostly extreme crs? Keep in mind genetics of both parents must be superb to have superb results. Also what i have noticed is Males carries the pattern of most of the babies, So to me a thick/crown male is better than a thick crown female.

Great tank you have... love it! especially with the healthy growing HC... I'm in the midst of setting up a planted tank as well... I would like to know how many hours of lighting for your setup? And you don't dose any supplimentary fert? Thanks :)

Hi Stephen...re quote...
Hi Stephen...hope work is not keeping you from your shrimp hobby ?
Ok...I've decided to give C02 a go and have setup a test 30cm cube tank with a small Japanese C02 setup... Sadly it's not an all singing all dancing model but does have a small needle valve that I can regulate flow.
I've also got a little DAZ Nano diffuser. Currently running 24/7 C02 straight from canister to diffuser and have setup 4/5 BPS to emit from the diffuser.
Have ordered a Cal Aqua bubble counter but couldn't wait to test...
No pearling as of yet and Cal Aqua drop checker is showing high Ph colour at present... How long will the C02 infusion take to balance the Ph to 30PPM (preferred for plants)...or this the wrong stats required for a CRS / Planted tank scenario...
Sorry for the number of questions....;)
Be good and happy xmas if I don't hear from you before...Chris

Hi Anubia,
To be honest i have never check the ppm of my co2 injected in the tank thus the reason i only run co2 at a very low bubble rate per few seconds. How much is enough? Well i use my judgement but would never advice to someone who has never done it before. I look at how much mist the diffuser also spreads throughout the aquarium if that makes any sense at all. I do have a drop checker but never found a use for it. This is what i noticed with HC and other plants pearling though, they need to settle down before they actually pearl like there is no tomorrow and this could take a month or two. I will also mention that if your plant is not pearling like HC doesn't mean it is not healthy or not having enough co2, to me pearling is just for my satisfaction of seeing plants pearl and look healthy if no pearling and hs is lush and green so be it nothing wrong with that specially when no shrimps die and steady breeding. I hope this answered some of your quarries bro.
Cheers,
Stephen

I would say the plants should be pearling within a week given that you provide ample lighting. The types of plants also makes a big difference too. Slow growing plants like mosses almost never pearl unless you inject tons of co2 and have about 3-4 watts/gallon. Fast growers like riccia should start pearling immediately.

The key to everything is BALANCE, i inject co2 24/7 in my planted shrimp tank and both HC/weeping moss pearl like there is no tomorrow after couple of hours when the light turns on. I don't think i'm injecting tons of co2 as mine only inject 1 bubble per 3 seconds. For me when plants adapt like HC and stat to room well then you will see a lot of pearling and that could take a few weeks to a month.

Beautiful!
My best shrimp (20 or so) are at your mid grade level - 2 or 3 at your high grade level. It's taken me 3 yrs of selective breeding from a colony of 15 low grade (D &C) shrimp.
It's very difficult to get Top grade shrimp in Australia, as importation of all live crustacea is illegal. So I had to selectively line breed them.
As such, I understand how proud you must be of these beautiful shrimp. Well done!

Thanks for your kind words, i heard about that in Australia which sucks because it limits to what you can keep as shrimp lover. If you got SSS+ from D & C as you mentioned then you should pat yourself in the back also, from a few SSS+ you can get hundreds in half a year you just have to know how to play the breeding program. I started with 1 male crown just to test the water out almost 2 years ago from Taiwan which i won by bidding and i had a friend brought it over for me. After a year or so i got a hold of some nice males of maybe 3 and one female. From there i just use my mid grade females and just selective breed. Now i have to breed back to SS+ females because some of the extreme SSS+ are becoming like snow white and losing it's flower head markings as they grow LOL...

Sounds like I'm on the right track, as I heavily cull the male population keeping only 1:8 females. And I even use the lower grade females, just to increase numbers. I've found this to be the quickest method.
Like you, I don't want to end up with a tank full of snow whites, I love the patterns. Back crossing is the key then, eh?
Do you only have reds or other colours, as well?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your kind words once again, only thing i don't like in the newer generation of the SSS+ tank of crs. More and more baby extreme are coming out and flower/crown red pattern in the head is fast disappearing every molt they have and in my experience when they reach breeding size all will be left of the pattern is shadow and would look just like snow whites lols... I guess i have to cross them back with SS+ grade crs with nice maros...
@adrian
I will do so when i have time as i'm busy with work etc... Mind you i don't have an SLR camera and mostly just use my phone cam, also nothing really to see as most of my tanks are bare and only has moss tied down in driftwood...
