Dom's fieldtrip thread had me foaming at the mouth with envy. It must be wonderful living in a country where you can pick up so many super aquarium fish and plants from a local stream. I can't imagine what it must be like to go hunting for channas and rare bettas in their natural environment. :p
I'm going to start saving up so I can take a holiday there. Johor looks like a nice place and I could visit Singapore, maybe spend an hour walking right round the island. :)
I'll have to practice my video game skills so the locals don't laugh at me. :D

Hi fatboy,
Pls dont envy me. :D i m not the maniac who will finish up all the fishes n plants in wild. Normally, i will collect 3 portions. 1st portion is for the Forest Research Institute Malaysia, 2nd portion is for the University Malayan and 3rd portion is for myself to try to propagate. Since both FRIM and UM are keeping the sample in dry form.
You must have a very good attitude while you are in wild. Otherwise, you will be in trouble. What kind of trouble is that...it is kinda hard to explain to you and you will believe only after you witness personally. Sometime some how...you'll need to pay back what you got from the wild. It is just like you will get injured without any reason.
The Channa we caught is not endangered species. And we let go the babies. just few adult are allow. This apply to any other fishes. Only experience hobbyst who expert in fishes will allow to keep their own collection. Otherwise, i will make sure they'll let go the fishes they caught.
An hour to walk around in Singapore is kinda impossible. Because you will get excited about the lfs over there. I was spent 2 days in Singapore just visiting the lfs from early morning till late noon.

Dom, I respect you for taking care of the environment! And am blessed to know someone like you. Wish there are more people like you in Msia rather than all the bloodsucker developers (and government) who only interested in making money!!!! It is as though humans are the only species trying to live?
My wife and I was just talking about our younger days at breakfast this morning and it is so sad that our children are missing all this in their life in this concrete jungle. So, it's my pledge to nurture our children to love the environment... :)

deforestation is kinda serious nowadays. i was so sad when i found a brakish water pond in seremban was fully covered by a developer. coz it is a very beautiful pond with some big trees, grasses and fishes in there. I didnt bring back anything after i found it is a very beautiful pond with beautiful fishes in there. just would like to enjoy the scene n feeling while i was there.
so, i told myself. as least bring back something and keep it before it is destroy by developers. Anyway, govr do reserved some forest. So, no worry about yr children cant see any jungle in future.

It's good to hear you are so careful about the environment, Dom. I noticed that in your other posts too.
I would love to see the fish and the plants in their natural environment. I would leave them undisturbed unless I knew I could somehow add to the hobby, like breeding them to ensure they can survive without natural stocks being depleted.
I've decided to set up a tank with common british native fish. It's really an excuse to spend some time with my head stuck in a pond. :) I also realised that I know nothing about the livestock I have locally and that's a shame. There's so much beauty on my doorstep it's foolish to neglect them.
By the way, I meant walking round ALL of Singapore in an hour. I was looking for it on a map and it took me a few minutes - it was hidden under a breadcrumb. :D

I am a researcher and a hobbyst. Not destroyer or businessman. And brain washed by those professors about the mother of nature.
