View Full Version : My new shrimp rack

Hello,
During the summer I had to move to a new flat, so I decided to build a new rack for my shrimps.
I have 32 tanks in summary, but there is still some empty ones. All of the tanks is 32l. I use different soils: basalt, sand, Akadama and Amazonia I, and theres is a mattenfilter in each tank, which is driven by an air pump.
I don't have too much light, therefore i planted microsoriums, cryptocorines and mosses in the tanks. For further decoration i use basalt stones and driftwoods.
Here is some pics:
Some tanks in the beginning:

First half of the tanks, after the fill-up process:

Very neat and impressive armada of tanks, Istvan - thanks for sharing! Where in your flat is the storage built up? Do you care about water evaporation in your housing area?

Hi szentgyo,
Thanks for sharring your setup.
Very nice to see that, which air pump you use ?
Thank you! I use 6 atman airpump, each one have 2 separated output.

To be honest, i don't care too much with the evaporation, but there is 2 big window in the room where the tanks are, and i open those windows very often :)
wow :) very nice view :)
Thank you! I hope one day you will come to visit me ;)

Thanks, i will try to keep updated the thread and share my experiances!
impressive set-up. what kind of shrimp do you want to keep?
I started to cycle the first tanks in july in this rack, and the first shrimps were put in in september, so now there almost each tanks have some inhabitants. I have quite good variety of species, from neocaridinas to taiwan bees, i will post some shrimp photos, just give me a bit time :)

Wow, very nice setup. Why did you choose the HMFs for your filtration? Was it because they were the only thing that made sense economically, or do you find that they really provide the best filtration?

Very nicely done. I think it looks great...and probably much more impressive in person. Pictures never really do it justice. I cannot wait to see more pics. I too just built a new 'rack' but more of a mix and match system. Someday I will have a full solid rack system like yours. =)

I was thinking a lot to choose the filtration system. In my previous tanks i used simply sponge filters, and i didn't have problem with that kind of filter, but now i wanted to try something else. Of course, the HMF not the best type, but i think it is quite good, it works like normal sponge filter, but it has bigger filtration surface.
Here is some pics from my shrimp:

King Kongs and Pandas are under the category 'Taiwan Bee shrimp' (King Kongs, Pandas, Wine Reds, Red Rubies, Blue Bolts). These shrimp are rare and expensive mutations of Crystal Black shrimp, Crystal Red shrimp and Gold Bee shrimp.
Beautiful tanks, szentgyo. You're clearly very successful with shrimp! If I might ask, what do you feed your cardinal shrimp?

King kong and panda (and red ruby, red wine, blue bolt...) are a mutation of the crs/cbs shrimps. You can read more about this shrimps in this topic: http://www.shrimpnow.com/forums/showthread.php/5142-Hot-topic-Gentics-of-Black-King-Kong-and-other-Taiwan-Bee-Shrimp

Great work man..hats off!!!
also, from the pictures I noticed the dried old leaves you have placed at the bottom of your tank?can we place any leaves that give that look, and help in breeding algae,or do I have to be concerned about toxin release or any such other complications?
Thank s ton!!

Everyone says you should use 60L tanks for breeding CRS due to keeping water parameters stable, have you had any problems with your 32L tanks?
I'm thinking if making a rack with 9 47L tanks but worried 47L is too small ???
(tanks are 56Lx30Wx30H cm)

In general, it is easier to keep water parameters stable in larger tanks (greater volume of water, less fluctuations). This does not mean it is impossible to maintain water parameters in small tanks, you just have to keep an eye on your parameters and carry out the necessary procedures to maintain the parameters (i.e. water changes, etc.). Take a look at some Japanese breeders; their tanks are quite small and they seem to not have problems keeping high grade CRS and Taiwan Bees.
I have an ADA Mini-M (~5 gallons/20L) with shrimp and do not have problems with it.

Yes, i do the water changes separately for each tank, i change 20-25% of water per week, it takes about 2 hours every week, but i spend much more time with observing the shrimps in front of the tanks :)

As Donny mentioned in a bigger tank you can keep the water paramter stable with less effort, but it is not impossible to keep and breed the shrimps in smaller tanks.

Some update from my tank system, and shrimps...
In this september i had to move to a new place, so i had to rebuild my rack again... Unfortunatly this time i could set up only 1 rack with 16 tanks instead of 2 racks. I finished the moving and the empty-running of the tanks at the end of september. Till the end of october i filled up all of the 16 tanks with shrimps, and this time the newborn shrimplets and berried females start to appear in the tanks.
As i had to reduce the number of the tanks i had to decide what species have to go and what species will stay... Now i am keeping only crs, cbs, rili, taiwan bee, white bee, blue and black tiger, malaya and mustang shrimps.
It seems that i will have the possibility to set up an another rack with 16 more tanks in spring :)
