These were advertised as "Black Algae Eating Shrimp". Any idea what they might be? Please ignore the two cherry shrimp...

Hi,
I think these shrimps could be Caridina cf. babaulti spp. green. They are usually green but their coloration can vary. Just have a look here (http://www.wirbellose.de/arten.cgi?action=show&artNo=120) :) .

hi,
I also think they could be a Caridina cf. babaulti spp. ( a shrimp similar to c. babaulti). But I don't think they belong to the greens, the male in the foreground doesn't really look like a male of the green shrimps at all. The stripes on the back of some of the females are also not typical for the greens.
I also have such babaulti-like shrimps which vary from brown to grey, greenish-grey till almost black. The males are bluish grey. When I bought them, one of the females was almost black, otheres were bluish.
I have no offspring yet, so I don't know if they breed true.
regards
Robert

Thanks for all your help. The picture was taken the first day the shrimp were added to the tank. Today I did notice where one has changed from the brownish color seen in the photo to a more greenish coloring. If I assume these are Caridina cf. babaulti spp. 'green' do I need to worry about them crossbreeding with my cherry shrimp?

I have never heard of hybridization between these two species. You can keep them in the same tank :) .
