Hello all,
I don't know if this is the right forum, but I think it belongs here. If one of the moderators think that it belongs somewhere else, then feel free to move the topic.
Now to my question. I have a vulcanic stone here that I want to place in my aquarium (not bought in a shop, but picked up somewhere). I only don't want to kill my shrimps with it becouse it would change the water parameters of my tank or something.
Does someone knows more about this?
Jacks0nxD told me that I have to test it with vinegar. If it begain to bruse it was beter for me to not place it in my tank...

I dont think vinegar would help with lavastone, it does with other stones. If you have moonstone it would be handy to put 2 drops of vinegar on it to see what happens.
I would just boil the stone for a few minutes to kill the bacteria, just to be sure.

Tnx! I'm gonna try it.
I think I'm gonna test it first in a test sample of water. Just to see what the effect of the stone is on the water parameters.

Finaly my new fresh water for my tank had the right water values. I took some of it and put my vulcanic stone in it (after boiling it for 4 hours). Yesterday I did my first measurement (3 days after I put the stone in the water).
My resolts;
Start value:
PH: 7,0
KH: 5
GH: 17
Values control water after 3 days:
PH: 8,0
KH: 7
GH: 17
Values water with vulcanic stone after 3 days:
PH: 8,0
KH: 6
GH: 16
So it looks like it has almost no impact to it all.
I also tested the stone with PH minus (i read that in an artikel of JBL), and the stone should be suitable for a fish tank.

Today I thought it was time for an other measurment.
The resoults:
Control water:
PH: 8,0 (a bit lower, 7,8 or so)
KH: 6
GH: 17
Water with stone:
PH: 8,0
KH: 8
GH: 21
The water in my region is always very hard. I can see that the water with the stone increased in hardness, so I think the water definetly reacts to the stone. I think that when i want to place the stone in my water, that I need to refresh the water reguarly.
I there someone with knowlege who can confirm that it is ok to put the stone in my aquarium with shrimps or not?
Thank you!

you might want to check it with something stronger than vinegar.
just be careful with stronger acids...

Today it was time to do some cleaning in my tank. The only problem was that the water I prepared wasn't good anymore, so i had to set an other bucket of water. So it will be tomorrow time to refresh the tank.
All done, i tought it was time to punt te stone in my tank.
The water values are now:
PH: 7
KH: 2 (a bit low, new water hopefully will be some higher)
NO2: 0 mg/l.

What type of shrimp are you keeping? Your parameters do not seem suitable for shrimp that thrive in acidic water. Why do you think your KH is low at 2? It would only be considered low if you are keeping sulawesi shrimp.
A lot of people keep volcanic stone in their aquariums and substrates like Volcamia, which are manufactured out of volcanic rock, are considered to be of the finest quality. The rock won't hurt your shrimp!!!
