Say when the shrimp population grows out of control and you feel a rumble in your stomach. Would you eat them?

Are you kidding? We love shrimps and never would use them for fish sauce. Did you?

I love to eat shrimps but not those ones...No much meat and way to expensive. The smallest I had must be what they call crevettes, 4 times the size of a bee shrimp! Furthermore sweet water "fish" is not so tasty as salt water.

I have nothing against shrimp cocktails etc. :)
But out poor little beauties?
As I feed them Mosura a Shirakura, it would be totally most expensive food I ever eat :)
Also as some analysis says, meat of aqua fishes is full of heavy metals and other non nice things, I don't think shrimps will be better :)
...
But in case of famine I will eat shrimps sooner than my cat :)

artic,

I have seen that in may areas in ASIA they do indeed eat dwarf shrimp, and why wouldn't they? Aquatic food sources are extremely valuable to native populations. I come from an aquaculture background and I am currently starting a red claw macro population for human consumption. The dwarf shrimp would make a delicious meal, but I am afraid I do agree that your purposes would be greater served selling the high priced shrimp for grocery money. I just wanted to back you up though...there is nothing wrong with your consideration. I would however, caution you against eating shrimp that have been fed commercial prepared foods. Aquarium foods tend to be high in metals and other compounds that could/would be harmful. If you planned on raising shrimp for food consumption you should switch their diet to more natural things such as blanched veggies and items like earthworms, daphnia, brine shrimp etc that are raised more organically. Just a thought.:D

My in laws are Laotian and joke about eating my dwarf shrimp (*gulp* I hope!)

I told them do they really want to pay in excess of $2k USD a pound for shrimp... Cause I would charge them for their meal LOL

I wouldn't eat them personally. I have a hard enough time eating saltwater shrimps and crabs (Im not big on the flavor unless it's head and all and I spend too much time removing the intestines) . And a harder time eating freshwater crawfish(mmm lung flukes). Lobster and squid are fair game though.

for the most part I have no problem eating most things that are considered "taboo" in the US. Some of the best flavors I've had are taboo.

I eat ALMOST all of the crustaceans (normal every day items). I eat our native Pacific NW crayfish every summer. As long as they are cooked properly there is no concern. They are a delicacy in many parts of the country and certainly in the world. Not to mention EXTREMELY DELICIOUS. If you ever had my Crawfish Fra Diavlo, you would definitely reconsider! LOL Really I find that their must be a seperation between pets and food. When I raised turkeys for food, it was difficult for my family as they became "friends" with them because they really are very cool. Then came Thanksgiving and the Hatchet! Let me tell you, noone was complaining when we ate good ole' Lunch and Dinner (that were their names!)! YUM! I care for all my animals whether pets or food, but you definitly have to make that line in your head as to what you are raising. I found the only thing that is problematic about eating small crustaceans is the prep work involved with cleaning them!:D

The only cray/crawfish are here are pre cooked frozen(new England) and it's still hard to find and always pre-seasoned. I'm also not sure if eat them right? Do you suck the body head? Do you just eat the tail meat? If their big enough do you bother with the claws?

I bet fresh tastes amazing. The lung flukes I know are only with under cooked. But still irks me.

Ney,
Here in OR we collect our own on hot July days from coastal rivers while snorkelling. The limit is 100 per day which takes a while. I do not suck the heads, but I do use them to make stock. We de-shell the tail meat AND the claws as our native crayfish have VERY large claws. In fact, the claws are so big when you remove them from the water the claws just fall with their weight and force of gravity and there is no threat to even get pinched from them. They look like little lobsters. Many are smaller, but you get your share of big ones. If I had to guess, I bet you get 2-3 pounds of cleaned tail and claw meat from 100. It is enough to eat a bunch while you are de-shelling them and then prolly two big meals with the meat. Making stuffed items like raviolis stuffed with crayfish meat, or "seafood" cannaloni etc are other family favorites behind the Fra Diavlo (Spicy red pasta sauce).:D

PS-Fresh right out of the river is pretty hard to beat, although like I said...the cleaning is a B!

Haha, this thread made me laugh because the first thing anyone says when they see my shrimp tanks is "can you eat them?".

lol, my people also ask me the first time you see them, if you can eat?.
Must be a primitive human instinct, we see something helpless and smaller than us, and our instinct says "eat it eat it!"

Some good points there Summit MicroFarm, and I'm lucky in that your native red claws are an invasive species in my local water way over here in the UK, and I have eaten many over the last few years :-)

Every one always asks me too if I'm breeding the crs to eat :-)

But as I do breed chickens, pigs and turkeys to eat and hunt my own food too, I often say yes lol

I just fried 3 or 4 dozen of Red Ruby with some garlick and lemon grass. Decorating my scallop cream soup with them. We usually eat those meals here as a starter followed by our traditional turtle stew. ;) Any questions for the detailed recipe? Silly one. ;)

our traditional turtle stew.

Traditional turtle hamburgers?
But the idea of using dwarf shrimp as decoration on a dish is not crazy...

I have friends asking me whether my shrimps can be eaten as well.
One even joke that it is not enough to fried with flour.

Dwarf shrimp is eaten here in Cambodia as well.
I have the feeling one of them that they eat is sought after by some shrimp keeper.
Will check that out next week.
