Your 9G nano look huge. What's the tank dimension ? It looked very long.

Nice job ! No CO2 i suppose ? What's the plant at the foreground ? HC ?
imi_sky

the tank has CO2 going straight to teh HOB filter and the front is HC patches

Interestingly-shaped tank! And you made it yourself? Cool! :D
I'm curious - what's that you've placed as the tank backing? Why not cover the entire backing with a moss wall rather than have the wall on one side?
You might also want to move your driftwood slightly forward to create a better sense of depth.
Just my 2 cents'! :p

one of my driftwood is pointing towards the front of the tank, well, both of them are if you look from the right angle, the reason y i only used 1 side for moss wall is i want some slow growing plants on the right hand side that will grow up, something like tonina

im in BC vancouver, the moss is taiwan moss, it grows like the xmas moss and the peacock moss but its only different under the microscpoe
as for the moss ball, if i first got it during july it was roughly 2" diameter, now its roughly 3"

imi_sky,
When you dose Excel were there any shrimps inside?
imi_sky
1st Nov 2005, 07:37 AM
nah no shrimps inside, i took them all out then went crazy with the tank, then i added 2 endlers and did 30% w.c and then all the small bugs + hydras died off, and now the plants went insane due to excel and algae seem to have disappeared. and the tank finished its mini cycle too

i still trying to figure out why the shrimps went crazy? it happens to me before. to the point all trying to climb up the HOB.
is it due to water parameters or just stressed with the new tank?
can you share your experiences? thanks!
imi_sky
2nd Nov 2005, 01:14 AM
when they start climbing and going crazy and wanting to get out of the water something in the tank is stressing them out. excel does contain copper sulfate and that is lethal to shrimps as people would know. but its a touch and go thing, some people dont experience any stress on shrimps with excel ( i didnt at one point ) but it all depends on the shrimps and how they were brought up IMO. when i see my shrimps go mad crazy theres 2 things i do.
#1 LOOK FOR A JUST MOLTED FEMALE SHRIMP.
#2 CHECK MY WATER PARAMETERS
usually its one of the two, but when shrimps try climbing out of the tank, thats always going to be #2 in my experience

Ok, question for you. How do you tell which shrimp has just molted? I see cherry shrimp females and some of them get this "pale line" almost a lighter red/pinky colour down their back. Do they get that line down their back just before, or just after they molt?
nano

thanks for the reply.

Look for shrimp that just sitting there and not picking (btw it can also mean the shrimp is sick). Another thing to look for is, the newly molted shrimp looks shinny under lighting just like wearing a brand new shirt :D . You can also look for empty shell.

Ah ok. As I thought...the pale line/faded shell happens *right* before they molt. They look beautiful, shiny and red right after. :D
Cheers.

the faded lines come up but not neccessary fading colors. , just the faded line is most important ( but that could also mean stress, so u got to look for a couple of signs not just one^^
btw candice i updated pictures if u didnt see it

hi again. i'm pretty new to all this test kits. what's KH for?
imi_sky
6th Nov 2005, 10:23 PM
Kh is for the hardness of your water. i found that all of my shrimps doesnt matter what type all like soft water with slightly acidic water

You have biofilter as background? how did you do water flow?
imi_sky
4th Dec 2005, 08:53 PM
i use a hang on back filter to move the water, and i depend heavily on plants to do most of my bio filter, i guse active carbonm and sponge in my filters thats it

Awesome I'm in Vernon B.C. maybe you can tell me some places to order shrimp/plants from since all my LFS near me pretty much suck except maybe 1 that has some plants but not in excellent condition and no shimp can be found at any of them.

You can try getting shrimps and nice plants at fin_omenal and King Ed's.
That's where I have been getting most of my stuff for my planted tanks.
Fin Omenal has a website. You can google it.

Yeah Fin_omenal is a great shop. If you can't find anything you want you can try asking them to order things. And they try pretty hard to find things for you.
I've been a customer for like 5 years. Just tell them you know Penny and that i recommended them (they may give you a discount).
