i'm using under gravel system for all three tanks. its all link up using 1 dummy canister( JET-3688), 1 working canister (Atman CF1200) to pump the water to the height and one teco TR15 to chill the water at 25 degree C.
the scematic of water flow is as follow from top tank :-
top tank -> undergravel panel 1 -> overflow pipe 1 ->
middle tank -> undergravel panel 2 -> overflow pipe 2 ->
bottom tank -> undergravel panel 3 -> inlet to canister 1 ->
inlet to canister 2 -> inlet of chiller -> outlet to top tank

will be constantly post how i did up my tank since 4 of March 2010 progressively. its now 99% done with some minor leaking of canister.

a short video on my 1st phase with middle and bottom tank on how my undergravel system and overflow pipe works

Pretty cool overflow setup. Do the tanks have an automatic stop to the overflow in case a power outage occurs to prevent a major drainage of water from the tanks onto the floor? That would be my biggest concern.

Also, why did you choose a siphon-driven overflow v. a drilled one? With a drilled overflow, the water stops draining automatically once the the water falls below the bulkhead. I'm not saying it's a bad design, by the way. Just curious as to the reason behind the method. :)

this is the identical tank for the middle and bottom tank
http://images.myphotoalbum.com/e/ev/evi/evil/evilt/eviltrain/albums/album01/image1133.sized.jpg
this is what i did for the under gravel panel ( covered with fine plastic netting ) to prevent finer soil from choking the under gravel panel
the glass of 5cm height will prevent the soil from going over to the front.( save cost for soil and easier siphoning of dirt accumilate in the front. )
http://images.myphotoalbum.com/e/ev/evi/evil/evilt/eviltrain/albums/album01/image1151.sized.jpg
the under gravel panel side is covered with ADA Amazonia Soil II ( bigger soil around 2.5 cm layed on the bottom. finer ones on the top )
top up with water and start cycling stage.

yes, if there's any power outage, the system will stop and most of the water will flow to the last tank. i will be posting how the over flow pipe system work in later date. stay tune.

i choose this design over drilled because i worry about the hole might crack and water will just leak right out from the bottom of the drilled tank. a much worst disaster than the pipe deisgn i use.

@.@ i really like the idea in your tanks....

how long you make a water change?

eviltrain
9th Jun 2010, 02:49 AM
i don't really do water change, i will normally top up every weekend. water parameter seems to be more stable this way.

killer007
9th Jun 2010, 02:59 AM
o...
you top up with R/O water?

the end result is nitrate
nitrate can be used up by floating plant is it?
so that is why no water change is okie cuz the tank is fully cycle?

eviltrain
9th Jun 2010, 03:05 AM
i top the water up with r/o water. 1.5 litre every week will do the job
yes. as you can see, the bottom left tank is filled with frogbits, giant duckweed and hornwort. they are used to soak up all the nitrates. Once i got excess frog bits, i will sell them or exchange them with a can Coca Cola with my Singapore friend

killer007
9th Jun 2010, 03:17 AM
this very sounds good...
and good cycle for all your aquariums

>.< i also like the idea of a can of coke...

eviltrain
9th Jun 2010, 03:26 AM
i kind of include all kinds of filtration in my setup. Mechnical ( undergravel system, canister filter,filter wool, filled with ceremic rings ), Biological ( ADA soil II, BB in ceremic rings ), Plants ( giant duckweed, mini salvia, hornwart, frogbits ), Chemical ( active charcoal, zeolite ) .
sounds too much. haha

killer007
9th Jun 2010, 03:30 AM
hahahahah
very that is like a lot...
but its best for the aquarium, all lof them are needed and will do their job well

what do you feed your high grade CRS?
they look solid

eviltrain
9th Jun 2010, 03:45 AM
I feed them with Mosura range items. Excel, Specialty food and Bioplus. I uses Shrimp Tonic, Mineral Plus, Old Sea Mud and Shizen as well.

killer007
9th Jun 2010, 05:02 AM

eviltrain

thanks eternity and nextgn,

yah. for now the water just flow out of the overflow pipes directly. i took out the idea of rain bar.
