I made a bamboo charcoal shrimp house and I've used it for a few weeks but it appears that my shrimps don't really like to go in there. (only passes through it once in a blue moon). Most of the time, there is no shrimps inside (I use torch to check). Does anyone have the same experience?

are you talking about the PVC tubing with riccia tied to the top?? IF SO,as far as i know its used for molting or just molted shrimps to have shade and a place to hide mostly baby shrimps use it

Guess that must be why no one use it.. cos theres no baby shrimps yet :p lol

Its made of bamboo charcoal not pvc..

I tried to attach a photo but filesize is too large so I'll resize it now..

what do you use to stick those bamboo pipes together? Tied?

If u used silicone, maybe thats why they do like it. Takes a long time to age.
I personally think Stainless steel mesh to bind them is the best.

Where did u get those bambo pipes Daho in IMM? I was looking for somewhere nearer to me where else can i get those.
I waitng to revamp my tank because its overrun with taiwan moss lol.

Dave,

Base on the size of the holes, it is good for babies shrimps. You will not see too many babies shrimps hidding in the holes, they are bold and like to hang out in open space.

Simcb,

You have to buy the larger size pack bamboo charcoal, the smaller size hole is too small even for shrimplets.

Ok noted.... bigger size ones .

Sad :embarasse i have yet to make my own shrimp house. But currently should have enough hiding spaces for now.

My HC seems to be growing upwards....so lots of gaps for them to tunnel and they like to hang around my mini/coral pellia plastic meshes. The center piece Stainless steel mesh with taiwan moss is almost 1 feet thick and 1 feet wide. I am thinking for making 2 shrimp house to replace my current center piece because they dont seems to like dig into the thick taiwan moss.

I used nylon string to tie the pipes and the mesh together. I got the bamboo ppipes from daiso. The pipes were actually a little bit longer but I used a hacksaw and sawn off a few cm off each one. If you need to saw them then you can boil the charcoal first so water enters the pores, then it is really easy to saw and there will be a lot less dust than if you saw them dry. :) In fact, I think if you do make one you can also drill some holes on the side for shrimplets to enter from the side. I only thought of that after it was in the tank so now I'm too lazy to take it out and work on it.. :p

Thanks NanoDave,
Will try boiling the charcoal. My shrimps too like to hang out in the open especially the young ones. The females are more shy when they are about to give birth so far.

What is the red pieces of small rock lookalike? Are they lava rock? What are the effects of putting them in the tank with crs? Don't they alter the ph of your water? Is that the secret of your success in keeping crs? :D
