I have a small 20L Sulawesi tank, which is going ok, but I have decided to
house them in a larger 75L tank, and make a few changes from the smaller one.

I'm going to use a better version of the HMF that some one showed me on another forum (thanks for that)

This one will have 2 main layers of mat, one carbon activated, which i like as
it is quite solid, and holds up better than other sponge.

I am then using a finer sponge layer over that, which will mean I can clean
one sponge at a time, thus not affecting the bacteria too much.

I am then using a small sponge at the base, to hold back the coral sand substrate.

Behind the HMF is an internal canister filter, a heater and the air hose.

Lighting will be quite low, just 1 60cm t8, as there will be minimal planting.

The stone work is just river pebbles from a local chalk stream, many of which have holes and small caves which the shrimp like to hide away in.

I'm using quite large pebbles, as the tylos are very good at pulling down, and generally moving about smaller stones, so they shouldn't be able to move these.

ph is 7.5 at the moment, but the tank is only 1 day old, so I am hoping the coral sand will raise it a bit, if not, I will add some powdered oyster shell, as it worked well in my small tank for raising the ph to 8. the shrimp also seem to like to eat it in my 20L

If all goes well, i will move some snails in in a week or so, and let them help cycle it. As they will move the coral sand about a fair bit, which will help.

whoa good job that you have done.. i am also upgrading to a 70L low profile tank for my sulawesi snails soon. waiting for tank maker to delivery in 1-2 weeks time.. :)

i assume your tank will not have much water current?

way to go Paid! I like the way you put sponges around the filter.

Its fairly mature now, and now contains my 4 cardinals and 4 harlequins, I've seen eggs on both species so fingers cross they will be happy.

edit, unsure why it came out so small, i used the bb img code :-?

As well as 9 tylos, all is well and I'm hoping the colony's will thrive

is there any reason why use sand?
they like sand?

um.. i want to ask...
toxicity of ammonia incease at PH 7.0 above and dramatic increase in PH 8.0 above...

how can i keep the ammonia low? by cycle the water, filter, and tanks?

Will one cycle sponge filter enough to keep this low for a 10 gallon tank?

Thanks

Its coral sand, a bloke on another forum, with a few hundred Cardinals in a simular sized tank uses it as a substrate to good affect, and has a very succseful colony, so this tank is a replica of his.

Also, i have found the tylos are much happier with the coral sand, as opposed to the more normal gravels i have kept them on in the past.

The shrimp tend to not stray from the rocks, in fact i have yet to see one on the sand :-)

But I'm expecting more exploration once they have settled and breed there first gen in there.

As to ammonia, like with any tank, mature filter material, good bacteria, and water changes should keep it in check.

Too much planting is tricky with the tylos, as they will eat most things.

Just a few pics to update this thread.

The tank has matured nicely, the cardinals all seem happy and active, the berried one no longer carry s her eggs, but I haven't seen any baby's, but still look for them.

Tylos are doing well, and breeding well, the black ones, the ones i like the least, are breeding the best lol. But there are also 3 baby bright orange ones.

Also this first pic might answer a question I've seen asked a few times "do tylos dig up substrate"

My Tylo Gold also digg through the substrate for food.
@ Paid2 my tylos do not eat Cryptos at all but do love Echinodorus sp.
