Mosura's mineral plus, old sea mud, bio plus are very common now in the market. Does anybody try to use them in Sulawesi shrimp tank? Any good or bad?

- Mineral plus adds minerals, Ga into water, which is needed by shrimps. It does not alert PH either, but will raise up GH and TDS.

- Old sea mud will add in some minerals as well.

- Bioplus is the food for babies. May it be good to sulawesi shrimps?

Ridoki, do you have problem with molting?

Yes, at first when they are introduced to mosura excel. Most of them molted and some died. But now they are quite stable. You have molting problems?

I now keep them with red cherries and feed them algae wafers. I gave up on finding food for the cardinals, I don't know what they eat but they seem to be happy. No molting problems the last 5 days.

wow thanks Kim, that's a good news! is this the first time you dose mineral plus and old sea mud to sulawesi shrimp tank? Thanks for sharing the experience!

yes first time. took out all the shrimp. does the standard recommendation for MineralPlus, but for Old Sea Mud, i only used 4 scope (the scoup supplied within the container) instead of dosing the standard "almost full can" for my 40L tank, as it will cause the water to be cloudy. 4 scoup will also cause cloudyness, but for about 2-3 hrs it will settle down. then i put back the shrimp and snails. maybe i have disturbed the substrate in the progress, as i removed 2/3 of the coral sand/chips mixture. Think its causing the GH to go too high.

since cannot get any reply, so i experiment it myself.

Ph and Gh now maintain around 8

thanks Kim, please keep us updated! I think mosura's mineral plus and old sea mud should be beneficial to sulawesi shrimps as well, as long as not overdose.

another molting sighted this morning. all shrimp safe and sound.

however 1 of the 2 sulawesi snail i introduced last thursday died. its not moving at all even when i pook it. the other 1 just gave birth 3 days ago. so i am left with 1 adult and a baby sulawesi snail. I guess the dead snail is not able to adjust to the new water condition.

well, i am getting another 2 more species of sulawesi snails today from a forumer from AQ. Tried to post my tank pics and realise i need 15 posting to do so. maybe if u are interested u can see my pics from AQ. i post it there

I us Spirulina powder for them,
mix with aquarium or RO water.

Mosura bioplus should be more welcomed to sulawesi shrimps than the specialty food. Bioplus is tiny, maybe more tasty as well for small shrimps, and can flow into the gaps/holes between rocks, where sualwesi shrimps feel safer to eat than staying in open ground.

i bought micro pellet fish food for the snails yesterday. the shrimp also feed on it. i bought the expensive 1 that contain algae content. those cheap type does not have algae content.

1 shrimp died this morning due to molting. but it died in blue color. i suspect its unable to complete the molting process as i can only manage to find the molted head portion in the tank.

i suspect the water is too cold at night. my fish pond water in the open is quite cold, though my shrimp tank is indoor. water is definitely not at 27-29 degree celcius. think will now turn on the light (Pl light 11W on 40L tank) overnight should make the water not so cold. Day time i draw the day curtain before going to work.

A heater will be more than sufficient in this case to keep temp in good range. Comparing to shrimps lose, a heater might also be cheap.

while pointing my wife to the sulawesi snails stacking on top of each other, i realise a tiny creature on top of the snail. its a baby cardinal shrimp. its so tiny, about 1mm in size that i almost miss it. Try to look for more, but i can only see that only one. maybe the rest are hiding, maybe the rest did not make it. but at last, there are some sign of stability in the tank now with new birth.

hopefully it will survive and more birth to come. At least it confirm i have both sex of shrimp in my tank. lol

not sure if its the mosura products that helps.......

What's the size of adult female?

kimyong
23rd Mar 2010, 03:37 AM
frankly speaking, till now i am still unable to determine the sex of sulawesi shrimp. Also do not know which 1 gives birth to the baby shrimp.

pls let me know if u have ways to help identify the sex of these shrimps.

Based on my CRS experience, I think you can watch the shrimps closely, female should be fatter than male, and you may see eggs under her belly.

kimyong
23rd Mar 2010, 05:48 AM
according to my research, there is no sure way to determine the sex for cardinal as they are too small. CRS i heard there is a saddle u can identify?? for sulawesi, most of the time u even need a infra red camera to see the eggs. this is what i read.

i dun have such equipment

you can see from this pic that female has a big belly. Her body shape is different, belly is kind of round...

hope I can see one of that in my tank soon... :)

I found that Mosura Old see mud seems be good for them. As I add some (more than less) they stop dieing.

I dosed some mosura old sea mud along with mineral plus days ago, I saw one shrimp's shell after 1 or 2 days, but all the shrimps are still surviving well. I also dosed mosura bio-plus for one time, they looked ok, picking up some, but not sure they ate or just picked up.

have not tried bioplus, maybe i should try too.

I feed only by bioplus, my don't want anything else.

As it should improve water quality and supports bacteria grow, it can't be bad.
