I was overjoyed when I saw my CRS gave birth to baby shrimplets. However, this lasted only for 1 week. After I did a water change i.e about 10%, all my shrimplets died. The adults are as normal.

Are CRS baby shrimplets very sensitive to water change? Should I not change the water at all but for how long?

Next, what do you guys feed the baby shrimplets? The same food as the adult? I am using Hikari Crab Cusine.

I have another female going to birth anytime.

P/S: My Blue shrimp gave birth to baby shrimplets as well. However, no causalty were found after the water change i.e. about 20% (this tank is more dirty).

How old were the babies btw? Did u add water conditioners? Just try not to water change if they are just born....for me i waited for 1 week. Seems to have more survivors for me.

As I have mentioned, I waited for 1 week before I do a water change. May have to waited longer I think. Any suggestion anyone? Thanks

Waiting for a week will not help if chloramine has been added into your water, chloramine is very stable, will not deplete even boiled, unlike chlorine. Have to use water conditioner, wait longer will not help either.

Hi vinyx,
sorry to hear what happend. Perhaps you can tell us more about your tank parameters for us to help you to prevent such things from happening again.

1. Did you add water conditioners? Try to use one that removes cholrine and chloramine . Whats your ph?

2. Did you test for ammonia,NO2 and etc ? Did you add any liquid fertilizer etc.

3. What's the temperature of your tank?

Usually blue shrimps are quite hardy. If the above 3 condition are satifsied, it is very hard to go wrong. Unless someone spray insecticide into your tank, which happends to me once(HDB fogging for Aedes Mosquito :( ).

What I meant was I waited 1 week later (after the CRS baby shrimplets were borned) then I did a water change. The water is straight from the tap with Aquarium Pharmaceuticals - Stress Coat water conditioner added.

The temperature should not be a problem as I kept the shrimps in the office with 24 x 7 air-conditioning i.e a constant temp of 22~23 deg celius.

The only thing I can think of is I must have had added too much iodine  . Normally I added 1~2 drops. However, the last water change I added 2~4 drops.

Expensive lesson to learn

Does the Stress Coat conditioner mention anything about removing chlorine? Its not neccesary to drop iodine every water change. I believe hikirai crab cusine is another safe iodine supplement for shrimps.

It is a water conditioner that can remove chlorine, neutralize chloramines and detoxify heavy metals.
