Hi

am setting up a 3 ft shrimps tank. will be using CL650 chiller to maintain temperature at 26degC. What would be the most appropriate filtering system to use?? Canister filter / sponge / UGF ?????? :undecided

Pls. advise.

You can use a canister filter with a sponge on the intake valve. Safe for shrimp with adequate filtration.

Hi!

I would suggest an internal sponge filter like the HMF (a Mat Filter that was invented in Hamburg, Germany in the 1960's). It is a very cheap and easy-to-put-up D.I.Y.-filter (about 30 Euro) and in my opinion it's the most efficient way of cleaning water biologically. It runs very long without maintenance (up to 11 years!!!).

That's a very interesting filter. I had never heard of this and did some research to see what it was. It sounds like a very effective 'sponge filter', much better than the standard air-driven sponge filter.

I've used google to translate a few pages like this one: http://www.tuttas.de/aquaristik/

ArcheNova, have you used one of these? I am about to convert a 20 gallon tank to a shrimp tank and might try a HMF. The mats are very cheap, less than 10 Euros from sites like http://www.aquaristikshop.com. I was going to use a Huey Hung sponge filter with a small powerhead but the HMF sounds much better. (the Huey hung was bought from http://www.atlantisaquatics.co.uk).

If you are using a chiller you need to get a canister filter or at least a internal pump to pass the water from your tank to chiller ?

@ fatboy:

Yes, I'm currently running 3 tanks with the HMF. My first one (200 litres, 3 years old) is still running without maintenance. I've never had problems with the water conditions yet.

Cannister would be good, shrimps need really good water quality and a cannister can do bio filtration very well. :)
