View Full Version : My new shrimp rack

Hello everyone
I finally setup my new shrimp rack. It has (3) 20 gallon longs. Top tank has flourite blk sand, middle has blk sand and aquasoil mixed, bottom has amazonia II only. Each tank has a HOB and a spongefilter. Right now I have just crammed each tank with fast growers to fight the inital algae bloom but I plan on each tank being simplistic with ferns, mosses and crypts only. I plan on getting Blue tigers, CRS and either snowballs/blue pearls.

Nice tanks! I have a rack too, but not for shrimps. One level of it though will be for sulawesis. I screwed up the placing of the levels, so I could only have 2 tanks in it, it's too late to fix it :(

Be careful with crypt plants!
When you trim they are releasing toxic substances, which can be deadly for your shrimp. Same as anubias sp.

Couldn't agree more! Crypt melt obliterates CRS, in my experience.

I have had crypts melt bigtime in my 100 gallon high tech tank with amanos and cherries that were not harmed. Thanks for the info I will make sure there are no crypts in my CRS tank.

Just an update I got 12 Blue Pearls from a fellow hobbyist locally yesterday. They seem to be doing great. Here is an updated pic of the rack. Obviously still waiting for the ADA to stop its amonia but on a side note my plants love it.

Thanks. Its my favorite as well. It has tons of java variations (needle, trident, regular, windelov) and Flame moss, subwassertang. It is gonna be my blue tiger tank. I am itching to get some CRS and Blue tigers but I must be patient.

I have never observed this to happen... *ever* for either species of plants, crypt or anubias. I have even observed my shrimp munching on the dying/melting leaves of these plants without any effect, death or otherwise.
jax, very nice tanks!!

Hi Jaxon,
Very pleasant rack and i agree with others to say the second tank is really nice.
I also like your top tank. Simple and great layouts with easy observation of the shrimps...
I just have to ask you...some more pics ;-)

Still have another week or two before the Aquasoil settles down. Then all tanks will have shrimp. I will try and get some good pics of my blue pearls but most of them are still small.

No I am not using co2 on these tanks. I tried to put alot of fast growing stem plants in there to help fight the inital algae. I will pull out most of the stems after another month or so. Most everything in these tanks are easy to grow and do not need pressurized co2. I can't believe how well the plants grow in my amazonia II tank. Almost better than my tank that I do use co2.

Very cool! Keep us updated on your project, especially your blue pearls. Post pictures when you can. I just recently started with RCS, yellow, and snowball shrimp. My plan is to next move onto blue pearls. I think they're beautiful.

Yea I was either gonna go blue pearls or snowballs with the flourite blk sand tank. Decided on Blue Pearls b/c someone had them locally. They are pretty cool little shrimp but very hard to photo.

Just an update. Hydra is gone and no casualties. Shrimp actual freaked me out the day after I dosed it though. Turns out the female was producing hormones and it was making the males swim all over the tank. She was berried the next day!

Got my Crystals and Blue Tigers today. Ended up with 20 CRS, 2 CBS, 14 Blue Tigers (about half of them are blue). These shrimp are awesome! I will try and get some closeup pics of my shrimp. Now ever tank has shrimp in them.

Just an update. I received 20 or so dark green shrimp yesterday. They went in the tank with the Blue Pearls and both seem to be doing great. I counted 3 berried female Blue Pearls today. I also lost 2 small BT's (i think) but the rest are doing fine. I did a w/c after I found the dead ones and the rest seem to be fine. I will get some more pics of the tanks as the mosses are growing very well. Here is a list of the shrimp I have.
Cherry, Blue Pearl, Wild Type Cherry, Blue Tiger, Crystal Red, Crystal Black, Amano, Ghost, Dark Green. I didn't realize I had 9 types of shrimp. Very cool:cool:
