Hi,
I just completed modifying my old 2ft 18W FL lighting set into a 4X2.5W power LED light for my CRS.
The power LED came as a set, what I did was get a 2ft aluminium bar, drill 4 holes, screw the LED onto it, wire up the LEDs, that it I got myself a 2ft LED light.
Beside the 4 power LED I also added 8 normal blue LED for night light.
Enjoy!

The LED lights looks very familiar, did you get them from IKEA? haha i think they do cost quite a bomb.

Hi,
I got the power LED set from my friend, he run a company that currently replacing some public flat corridor lightling with this energy LED light in Singapore.
Actually we are working on the cost, if you are interested PM me.

I'm quite interesting but I'm rather concern about whether the brightness of a 10 Watt normal tube light and 10 Watt LED is the same? What I heard was LED tend to be brighter.

Sorry LED or OLED?
I like it.

Wow! That works very well as a retro fit in a standard fixture! Well done. I is a lot of light, let us know how the plants and moss do with this fixture. I am also curious to see if you will have any algae problems. How many hours per day will it be on?

Meanwhile there are T8 tubes with LED, which can be used instead the normal neon tubes.
They last for 50,000 hours = over 11 years by 12 hours light each day.
Neon tubes should be changed every year because they loose light intensity.
LED have the same light over the whole period.
Further they save much energy while they need less Watt for the same illumination.
Last but not least the LEDs do not heat up the tank, what is a great advantage.
I think more and more people will use this light for aquaristic in future.

Hello everyone...
I am interested in learning more about the use/type/properties of LED for aquarium use. I would appreciate any links to articles on the above.
Also, I know we cannot post links directly to retail sites, but can any of you guys point me in the direction of where I can purchase these LED strips in North America or easily shipped to NW US????
Thank you in advance:D

I can't post direct links yet (15 post limit), but above is one of the guides I followed while investigating DIY LED lights for my aquarium.

This is huge over on the reef forums.
From what I've gathered, most LEDs do nothing for FW aquatic plants. I'm not sure how much people have looked into this- but i think it solely depends
on the type of LED used.
Little 1w LEDs (common type) do nothing. They don't have the proper spectrums for photosynthesis. Don't bother unless making moonlights.
What OP is using is more appropiate. Reef 'ers use 3watt-5watt LEDs with MUCH success. High power LEDs are much more expensive ($5-$8usd a piece i think). A 3 watt LED packs a Huge punch. Par38 bulbs which throw off 21 watts are replacing Much bigger fixtures of higher wattage. How much you need depends on the size of your tank.
10watt of led is not equal to 10watts of t5ho, compact flourescent, or even metal halide - it's better(given preliminary results, remember LEDs are still sort of new to aquariums)! Given you have the right LEDs. Of course the only real way to test is par, and no one usually has a par meter laying around.
For lighting a fish/shrimp only tank 1 watt LEDs
and LED tubes or anything you can imagine is definitely OK and a great way to save on money in the long haul and create a shimmering beatiful look to your aquarium. You could add moonlights too, which would be nice

Hey Taz, do you have a specs for that LED? or at least a model number
They do make LED that are suitable to grow a plants (ie 6500k and up)

paronaram,
My bad...I should ALSO told you to click on the second link on the GreenNeedle page and read the forum. Everything the guy did on the GreenNeedle page he says he basically followed this other guy's forum (which is the second link on the GreenNeedle page) All the info you need is in that forum thread. Sorry, I shoulda been more accurate.:D

Hi ALL,
Great to hear bro here are interested in my DIY LED light set.
Sorry to say that I do not have the spec of the LED, but I measured the brightness of each 2.5W LED is about 900 LUX @1ft distance, and the colour temperature is 6500K, which is good enough for aqua plant.
After used the LED for 2 week, the US fissiden and java moss are both healthy. And I will continue monitor the plant grow rate and the electricity bill.

Hi, Taz.
Your mosses look healthy and I'm sure they will do just fine with these LED's. Hope you don't mind if I post another link to DIY LED for "SMF". This guy just started his project, but I think definitely one to follow.
