Hi guys,

I have finally manage to get myself 5 CRS and will try to add a few more :p (when I get my next "paycheck"). I have also euthanasia, give or flush away some of the other aquatic animals. To make it a mostly CRS tank, I reduced my cherry shrimps to only just 2 in my planted tank (both females - these 2 are the reddest and most exceptional hardworking algae-eaters. They even clear my tank of hair-algae once. Can't bear to get rid of them). Now, the thing is, I have GREAT difficulties trying to differentiate the sexes of CRS. *Arrghh* >(

I tried referring to fruitpies' sexing guide, the rounder, straighter body and shorter longer attena theory; and I think I almost gone mad :joking: Some of my CRS have rounder thicker (supposedly female yeah?) bodies but longer shorter feelers and some have shorter bodies (supposedly male yeah?) but have shorter feelers if not same length with the rest! And then, it is like the more I look at them, I think they are all males! Their shorter attena seems "malely long". But then again, they look feminine base on fruitpies's sexing pictures as they look rather round at the head, rostum...Oops...so I have an all girls team?! :undecided I dunno whether I should continue to add some more members to my CRS family

I love to see these beautiful shrimps healthy and happy in my planted tank and it will be even better if they can breed. I really hope that it is possible for me to breed this beautiful little buggers...but :embarasse I dun wanna spend anymore and to get an all boys or girls team. No offense but I kinda prefer my shrimps to be heterosexuals.

Anyone has similar experience or a better way of sexing them? I think my shrimps are all about 1.2-1.3cm.

(I've got a few more question on CRS but will post it on another tread).

Based on my own experience. It takes time for our eyes to get used to the CRS male and female features. Its very hard to see M/F if the CRS is less than 3 months old.

They may look the same initially when u just got them but as they grow older(maybe they are young CRS) their M/F features will show. When our eyes get used to the CRS(i assume you would stare at them everyday :D ) its easier for us to spot the differences. It took me 2 months  to tell which is male and which is female.

Your CRS is still too young to tell. Give them a couple of months, before they are going to carry eggs then you really can see a big difference.
Won't be so suay. You should be able to get at least one of the opposite sex.....
Happy shrimp keeping.

Yes about 1.2 to 1.3 cm is still very small! Give them some good tender loving care :)

Use torchlight to shine the top part of crs (head & body joint) area, think you can see the so call diamond shape like female cherry ready for mating sign.

Sorry i don't know how to explain....
If you can tell how females cherry are, that easy for crs.

Hi Gary,
don't worry, your shrimps are just too young to see the differences clearly. Even after years of breeding them, I still make mistakes in sexing them. The mentioned differences in fruitpie's articles are the best you can find but the shrimps should have reached sexual majority at first. Normally they reach this with a size of around 2,2cm or 4-5months.
So just wait and observe them further. It takes a trained eye to see the differences. If you sex cherry shrimps for example, you just look for the yellow ovary but this does not work well with CR shrimps because the brown ovary is hidden and very hard to see under the red color. But the ofter traits like the antennae etc. work well.

Best regards

Robert

Hi there,

Where Can I get CRS which is a sincere seller or teacher ? To learn sexing the shrimp and discuss shrimp knowledge.

I think there is an article in this forum on how to differentiate gender. :)
