This is my 3 months old tank. Start with Java moss given by Dom and 8 cherry shrimps.
Currently house ~30 cherry shrimps, one oto and 4 lamp eye.

The lamp eye is added 3 weeks after setup to control micro fauna (artemia, hydra etc).

Equipment:-
Mini H.O.B with sponge at inlet.
2 x 11W PL light (8 hours)
NO CO2
Liquid fertilizer (twice a month)
1 x 9cm DC fan (24 hours)
Auto-top water up (the white color floating thingy at middle of surface )
Temp: 24C-26C constantly

Again many thanks to Dom for the Java moss that make this project possible.

Full of algae to feed on! :D

Your moss looks really healthy and growing well, I am curious to have a look at the auto top-up mechanism as well. :D

Hey Chamelion,

No worry about the moss. I hv tons of it. :D I am curious about the auto water top up system too....Pls take the picture and show us.

Yr moss growing very well. May be it because of the fertilizer + the low temp. It is a very good tank for cherry to breed.

Here is the floating sensor. Basically it's a floating switch.

Water low = Power head on
Water high = Power head off

The container with green cover at back contain water and power head.

Chamelion,

Do you have schematics of how you built the auto top-off mechanism? The pic is great, but still hard to visualize how to build one. Thanks.

I will post more pic soon.

Dom,
This was discussed in Myfish but i forgot the part's info and i am not able to retrieve info from Myfish. The sensor was introduce by another forumer adn i brought it from farnell and cost me rm4+.00. Unfortunately i throw away the receipt and there is no info/serial# on the sensor.

Give me sometimes, see whether i can trace back any info on the sensor.

Liquid fertilizer??

where can I get this, and what is it really called? Can I just go to my hardware store to get it? I live in the States.... Doesn't these chemicals harm the shrimp?

Hi,
there are special liquid fertilizers for aquarium plants. These fertilizers contain no source of N or P because normally there is no lack of these elements and a too high level of nitrate (N) or phosphate (P) would harm fishes, shrimps, etc. . Every large brand produces their own liquid fertilizer and you should be able to find at least one of them in every LFS (if it sells live plants, too).

I strongly recommend to avoid normal fertilizer for normal plants, which often have a distinct ratio of N-P-K.

These special liquid fertilizer for aquarium plants do not harm your shrimps.

regards
Robert

I am a newbie and I have a 1.5 feet tank as well, only started a month ago so no shrimps yet, just 12 tetras helping me to cycle the tank but I have this Blue-green algea infested on my java moss which is getting on my nerves. >(

How can I get those lovely green algea in stead of those bad algea on the wall?

Um......... I have always noticed my cherry shrimps have yellow eggs. They seem to turn more yellowish and I think she will give birth soon so they are kinda pale yellow now. Not too sure if I'm right but that's what I have noticed.

Are cherry and CRS cheap in malaysia? hehe I wonder if my relatives will send me some.Hehehe

In Malaysia, a cherry is around RM3.50 and CRS grade C is RM15.

After convert to USD (roughly, USD1 = Ringgit Malaysia 4 dollar),
cherry = USD0.90
CRS grade C = USD3.75

I love the green algae on the wall... Does the shrimp clean it/eat it? How do I get green algae like that? I have spots of greenish/brownish algae on the wall on my tank.

Don't change the water like a month or two. Fully planted or 3/4 tank full of mosses or with other plants. Turn on the light for 24 hours for first day. Then turn on the light again for 10 hours per day. Feeding the shrimp once per day. And you will get this algae easily.

But this apply to those tank which is with stable water parameter.

caseyhoo,

could you post up some guidelines on how to improve the growing process of the moss ?

And what kind of furtilizers do you use ?

Mosses growing well in low temperature. Try to lower down your tank water temperature like 24-26C.
