Hello all,
today I found some blue shrimps in one petshop here. The man in the shop told me that they are "Cardina sf. babaulti", but he was not sure (this ID he got from the supplier). In I found information for green shrimp. I guess that the blue one is just a variant.
These shrimps looks like Red Cherries, but they are blue.
Is corss breeding between these shrimps (Cherries and Babailti) possible ? I'll buy some blue shrimps, but the big question is if they need different tank or I can keep them with Cherries without problems.

Hi,
it is no problem to keep shrimp species of differnet genuses, in your case Caridina and Neocaridina, together. They won't crossbreed. Cherry shrimps (Neoc. denticulata sinensis var. 'red') can cross breed only with other specimen of the species Neocaridina denticulata and maybe with Neoc. palmata but I'm not sure. They won't crossbreed with the babaultis.
BTW, I doubt that these blue shrimps belong to the C. cf. babaulti group. In most cases they are just malayan shrimps ( a Caridina species). The blue coloration can be very intensive but it is not stable.
Sometimes you can get blue Neocaridina palmata which look like this:

They look very similar to cherry shrimps. The blue coloration is not stable and the offspring won't be blue but more or less colorless or grey. The third possibility is the normal kind of Neocaridna zhangjiajiensis which is also blue from time to time. These shrimps get more and more popular in Europe and they can look blue or bluish, too. But the blue coloration is not stable. BTW, they looks also very similar to cherry shrimps on the first gaze, except for the coloration of course.
So these "blue shrips" are probably malayan shrimps, Neocaridina palmata or Neocaridna zhangjiajiensis. All these species can be blue but the coloration is not stable and varies from grey to blue. BTW, both mentioned Neocaridina species are rather easy to breed.
best regards
Robert

Thanks for the reply :-)
I'll prepare different tank for these shrimps for now just to be sure that they are not crossbreeded (if I get baby shrimps ). Latter I'll try if they can be cross breeded :-)

Babulti rostrum is quite exclusive, a picture of the rostrum would be quite hepful.
I am keeping Blue Pearl Shrimp, and they look quite stable. Intensity of the blu is depending of soil, in darker soil they look bluer.

Your pics make the blue pearls look very attratctive Xema, dont think these are of the cherry family, the rostrum is longer, I think these are babulti, they vary in colour from light blue to dark blue and a some rusty brown over the blue,
The rostrum is clear in this pic.

Yeah that long rostrum highly serrated links your shrimp with babaulti types.

Hello, I have bought blue shrimps - probably Caridina babaulti "blue" but their offspring is not blue. None of young shrimps is not blue. Do anybody know what is the reason of blue coloration of shrimps which I have bought? I have seen in many forums that I m not alone with this problem. Do you mean, that breeders coloured them by some type of chemical substances etc? Bought shrimps are still blue for months, but no blue young shrimp.

how to tell if the Caridina babaulti var is really "blue", "green"."yellow" etc and not just ordinary malayan shrimps selected for their "colours".
