Just came home and i have a situation on my hands, My cooling fan had stopped working. Its like 11:50 PM here and there is nothing i can do right now.
Will probably take a day to get it fixed or replaced, by then the temp would probably move to 26-27 C from the current 22-23 C, but gradually.
Would the baby CRS be effected?
Any quick fix remedies to prevent any deaths?

I would suggest you put even regular fan on it (the one use to cool the house )
Also aerate tank water .

@ Eyal - Thank You for your suggestion. I have kept the fan in the room on, so thats helping a bit.
@ Kimbo - Thanks Buddy
@ Mopas - Thanks for your suggestion, The idea of ice in a bottle crossed my mind, but was scared that it might cause too drastic a change.
Luckily the weather has been quite cool out here. Today morning the temp was at 23 C in the tank, Just came home 30 min ago,the temp is still at 23 C :cheesy: .... By tomorrow afternoon i should have the cooling fan back on.

Thanks for the word of caution mopas.
My Co2 bubble count is kept very low ... at 1 bps (Bubble per second) also its rigged to a timer , which is again rigged to a circuit breaker in case of any power fluctuations to prevent the solenoid which controls the CO2 from blowing up. Co2 is pumped in for only 7 hours in a day ..... plus the tank is heavily planted .... So i guess im a bit safe :)

i have seen this method somwhere . Get a few empty bottles and fill it with distilled water then freeze it. Then you can use it in your tank allowing it to cool your water. and several bottles can last you for some time.

Very true .... this method is quite commonly used for cooling, but it cannot be adopted as a permanent solution

Very nice baby shrimps. Congratulations Seetharam. How long did it take since you spotted the female with eggs until you found the baby shrimps?
seetharam
12th Oct 2009, 06:48 AM
The females were berried when i got them. I would say they are about 10 days old now. I guess the gestation period for CRS in 25-30 days.

Just reached home sometime back ..... All well in the CRS Tank .... can see the babies running around as well .... they seem to have become slightly big in 3 days that i was away.
How long do they take to grow to an adult stage of say 1 cm ?

Hi all, I just spotted 1 shrimplet in my tank today. And I notice that the mama shrimp is no longer carrying eggs. This is my first batch of shrimplets as well. Is it only 1 shrimplet survied the hatch or they may be hidding somewhere else? I read somewhere that if you see one, you should be able to find a few more. Any members can enlighten?

Congratulations fastlane !!!
I think the babies hide for a few days after they hatch. When i first spotted the shrimplets last week, i saw just one and then after looking very closely found another two. Yesterday i was able to see 6 shrimplets at once.

Thank you. I am setting up my second 2ft this week end. I have another 4 more berries CRS, 2 are S grades. I want to prepare for an increase in population....Hopefully. Keeping my fingers cross. Not counting my chicks yet before the eggs hatch. You know, anything can happen with these highly sensitive shrimps.

Yep .... I agree, These shrimps are quite delicate.
Do you plan to move the berried CRS into the new tank?
fastlane
14th Oct 2009, 09:30 AM
No I am leaving them in the current tank. Afterall the new tank needs about 4 weeks to cycle. The berried shrimps are about to hatch. They are into the 4th week already. Eggs have turned from brown to clear. I don't want to create any problems by transfering them. And I am also trying out Magic Soil in my 2nd tank.

Sounds like a Plan :)
Magic Soil .... Do you mean ADA Amazonia?
fastlane
15th Oct 2009, 01:53 AM
Not ADA. It is called Magic Soil, from Riki Japan. Same properties as any shrimp soil but I like to deep black look.

Hi Ram,
nice... nice pics... the shrimplets appears healthy n growing well... nice colors too...
one question for u... do u get hair/thread algae (Spirogyra) in your HC lawn?
Spirogyra is a type of non-branching green filamentous algae... this algae doesn't appear in polluted water systems but in ones that r rich in nutrients (liquid ferts, CO2 n light)... it grows very fast... forming long entangled strands...
here's a pic...
2434
i understand that poor water circulation may induce this algae... but then with the type of growth of HC and mini pelia... n in fact most mosses... water circulation is bound to be poor between the leaves/stems...
i didn't have this before... guess it must be contamination from another source...
not saying that u might have this infestation... was jus wondering if u face this issue as well... from your fotos... your HC appears to be very healthy n not infested...

Thanks for your comments Louuu :)
Now coming to Spirogyra ..... Luckily i dont have this algae in my CRS Tank
But i have faced this algae ...... worst algae to combat that i have ever come across ..... Most likely way of propagation is through contamination, this algae affect moss more than anything , growing along with it. Now the worst part is as you said ... this algae thrives in conditions that your plants need as well.
It was a menace in my 3 feet tank last year December.... In my experience the only thing it grew on was the moss and E.Vivipara and it did not grow on any other plants..... i guess it will grow more freely on plants that it can get easily entangled with ..... I was able to eliminate it almost 100% within 2 months by religiously removing it manually everyday, cleaning filter (Eheim 2217) once every 15-20 days and improving the circulation of water using Lily Pipe Outflow.....one fine day it was all gone.
Now from past 3 months it has come back again .... but instead of going through the whole process of fighting it again ... i went the easy route ..... got 4 American Flag Fish and in my experience is the only thing that eats this algae .... no other algae eater touches it .... on the flip side they are not meant for shrimp tanks as they will eat the shrimplets.

Thanks for the info Ram...
my infestation isn't as bad as the pic... but could still see some strands in the fissidens n mini pelia... was trimming the HC that i notcied it got between the HC as well... have decided to rip off most of the tightly growing HC patches... leaving jus those hugging the ground...
no time to try battling this spirogyra... realised this is a formidable algae type from internet searches... as 2 of my mosuras are berried n 1 of them is due for delivery in a week or so... hence decided to jus remove as much of the "breeding ground" as possible...
can't do much with the fissidens though... as i saw 2 frys hanging around the fronds... have continued to dose seachem excel... hope it will at least contain the spirogyra... dare not overdose the excel as the frys are only few day's old...
