hey everyone,

My water here is very soft and I would like to raise the GH to soft for my CRS tank and wondering which product is good to raise but I don't have access to most of the mineral stuff in Canada, these are the list of product I have access at LFS which one is safe and good to raise GH?

1.) African Cichlid Conditioner
2.) seachem equilibrium
3.) Kent R/0

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Patrick

For shrimps, better use shrimp product like Mosura Mineral Plus, which I am using.

I am quite wary on Equilibrium, it has little undisolved particulars, what will happen if shrimps eat them?

Alternately you can use some coral chips in your filter. This will raise both GH and pH...

Hi Ahdex,

I actually tried last night and I saw some little power stuff is not undisolved at the bottom of my container, so I only use the top half for my water change. Beside the undisolved stuff, is it equilibrium safe for shrimp??? Thanks.

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Refael Hdr,

I am using sponge filter and I tried put some coral chips after a week and check my water and the GH does not seem to raise. Thanks.

Cheers,
Patrick

Patrick when using equilibrium do mixs them first with bit of water in a container before pouring into the tank.Any way you only use it after water change.Yes Patrick this product is save for CRS I'm a user myself

Hey Patrick.

It's CRS Fan from other forums here. I also live in the Vancouver, BC area.

I religiously use Kent PH Stable (1/8 tsp/10 gallon) combined with Kent R/O Right (1/2 tsp/10 gallon) and have good results with my CRS/CBS. Mind you this is in a tank with Flourite Black as a substrate (I am not using an enriched substrate like ADA which has a tendancy to lower PH). The 29 gallon tank referenced above, I run pressurized CO2 at a rate of 1 bps. PH = 6.7.

I am currently breeding Blue Pearl and Baubalti Green in a 15 gallon tank with ADA Amazonia I using the Kent products in the ratio's listed above. I am also running about 1/3 cup of crushed coral in my Eheim Ecco 2232 on this tank. This tank has no CO2. PH = 7.3.

Please note: it is best to premeasure and dilute the Kent products in water before adding to your tank.

Hopefully that helps.

Stuart

Hi,
Interesting... maybe it's because the flow rate through the chips media is very low so it takes more time. Anyway, in the long run Calcium will be dissolved gradually, what will lead to GH increase...

What kind of test kit are you using?

Hi Stuart,

Sorry for late reply. I was really busy last a while. Thank you so much for the information. I was at Kind Ed asking for some corals chips (i had some really small piece so i though some bigger could be better) but they told me corals chips will not increase GH, it will only increase PH. I have read some many people saying corals chips will increase GH, not really sure who is right anymore... :) I guess I would have to keep trying to see what works for best... currenlty I have six mommies in my tank so I don't really want to mess around too much...

BTW: I love those blue peral they are really cool, I was thinking to get some in the future. Do you do not keep CRS anymore? I remember in the other forum you mention about it, not sure is you or someone else.

Patrick

Hi Refael Hdr,

I see, that make sense. I am using Hagen KH/GH test kit. Thanks.

Do you live in Surrey? I know our water here is too soft and would want GH to be about 4-8c. I(we) use cichlid conditioner, works fine just make sure you raise the GH on the water you have from the tap going in your tank first. Mine is sitting between 6-7 right now. Hope this solves your queries.
