Shedd Aquarium, Chicago IL, USA
Opened in 1929, it is one of the oldest public aquariums in the world.

Some friends and myself took a trip down to this great aquarium. There is so much there it really needs 2 days if you really enjoy aquariums which i believe most of us do.

They have displays ranging from Caribbean coral reefs, Amazon, Pacific coasts, local biotopes, and a lot more.

Some of the exhibits were just to dark and hard to photograph all the movement, I really wanted to get some good photos of their 400,000gal shark exhibit. They have more than 20,000 aquatic animals including: fishes, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and invertebrates of approximately 1,500 different species are on display.

Hard to say how much they have there, but from what I was able to read the Ocenarium was ~3million gallons, reefs were 840,000gal, the shark exhibit was 400,000 gallons. They still have a porpoise display that has to be around 500,000gal and a dolphin room that has to be around 1million gallons where they do shows. I couldn’t find anywhere that listed the total volume of water they have there. I couldn’t guess on their freshwater volume, or on the numerous reef tanks, but some were upwards of 1000gallons. The building is around 422,000 square feet.

I know a lot of the members here are from all over the world and my never get to see it, so I want to share some of the unique displays.

Here are some images:

I currently work there as a volunteer and I am trying to convince them to get freshwater shrimps, some sort of breeding program for atya gabonensis or Atyopsis moluccensis. Heck, in behind the fishtanks there are some creature not on display that they breed for conservations. I mean, most people are not familiar with freshwater shrimps. Someone that works there said it is a good suggestion for special exhibit. I hope in a few months maybe they hear me out. o.O They used to have a huge lobster in the Philippines section there, but he is no more, you get to see him?

You made great pictures there! If you ever go back, I hope you take more pictures. Tell them they need freshwater shrimps too :)

Yes, it's very impressive that place. Even the location there downtown under the skyline on the banks of the lake. Nice to be back there again a little bit...
I even got the nephentes plants in the last pictures in my living room by now.
Too bad my girlfriend back then didn't want to look around longer.

Anyways, another great one is in Lisboa.
