If you want to start with sulawesi shrimps....don't even try to buy these spicies,
they are hard to keep......
Died in a couple weeks......
Its better to begin with the Cardinals.....easy to keep and they breed as well....
I start with 10 of these and after 10 months....I think there are about 60 maybe more ...of them now......

White spot... no longer a challenge...
would like to know anyone who is able to keep alive the spongicola for at least 2 months and hopefully we can all share on how to maintain them.
If all the hobbyist fail then it could simply mean that this species is better left in the lake.
So anyone?
Keep strictly to Caridina spongicola aka Halequin aka celebes beauty
Thanks

The longest time I've succeeded keeping them is 2-3 monthes. I'm intending to try again in a special tank dedicated to them only...

see my post on Sulawesi shrimps described. Apparently C spongicola is not as big or as colourful as what we are keeping now. It is also found only in a small area of Lake Towuti whereas C. woltereckae is widespread and a rock dweller.

Does it make sense to also look at what is being fed? Many of these species share similar habitats - rocky areas in the Malili lake system. With the level of speciation in the lakes, I wonder if they feed on different things. The recent paper that JoyDiv posted showed that C. woltereckae is genetically related to C. spongicola and an analysis of gut content (spongicola) showed they fed on diatoms. Diatoms are cultured for aquaculture and for biofuels. I wonder if this could be used to supplement the biofilm in our tanks. commercial efforts to culture diatoms add sodium metasilicate to the culture media to encourage growth.
What are people feeding their C. woltereckae?

hi people !
i start on this forum just today , and i saw a few posts with mistaken names of two species of sulawesi shrimps.
the shrimp we all have been called spongicula is actually caridina woltereckae.
so the dificulty in having them in aquarium is not relatead with the sponge ... but possibly with the food . i only have woltereckae for two weeks , but i feed them with powder spirulina. letīs hope ...
