This is my new 8inch messy rocky hill setup. The rocks are from the road side. The moss are "Singapore" moss. No CO2. No filter. A mini ac fan running and the tank placing under the 18W of FL tube. 6 hours photoperiod. 2 cups of water changing daily. (to remove the protein surface.)

The mosses start growing and pearling. There is an Otto inside currently. Planning to introduce the shrimp. Do you think shrimp can survive without the filter?

Yamato shrimp will not have a problem surviving in there.

How many litre is the tank? If you are changing water daily and feed very sparely, it should be fine for hardy shrimps.

Why not add a filter, that will do away the daily water change job.

Hey, your mosses don't seem to be doing well. They are browning, that should explain the protein surface I guess. I think shrimp cannot survive in your tankwater, it should be of quite high ammonia level as the plant is dying.

Hi Fruitepie, I am not sure how many liter of this tank. It is 8x8x8inch. I wanted to get a filter.... just where it is located out of the power plug. :embarasse

Walter,
The "Singapore moss" was kept inside a pail without the lighting, co2 and just min of water for months. I was totally forgotten I have a small pail of mosses leaving outside my balcony. So, just quicky take it out and put inside this tank. The rest, i just thrown into the 2ft shrimp tank.

This tank is about a week old only. The right top corner with a bit java moss. The protein surface coming from the mosses when they photosynthesis right? Since there is no fish inside the tank. And why the amonia level is high? I should snap the picture of the new grown... And the moss is growing instead of dying.

I was tried this setup for my boss nano tank also. She just want the tank look nice n really low maintenance. So, no filter and lighting. Just the room lighting. But inside the aircon room. The java moss inside her tank is growing like out of control.

I'm curious to know how you're keeping the mosses down on the substrate...

Mostly the moss are sinking. I just place the moss in slowly and fill in the water slowly and gentle. That's why i am not keeping any fishes in there. They will digging or pulling the mosses.

Ammonia can come from dying plants too.
(Probably comes from dying moss that is buried in the substrate that is anchoring it)
