Does anyone know whether the wire mess used for growing riccia in planted tanks leech anything into the water? Do they corrode or something? :)

I think it is stainless steel and it shouldn't leach anything or corrode.

Even if it's stainless steel, it will still subject to corrosion. It depends on the grade. The higher the Chromium(Cr) content, the better the resistance to corrosion. Common grades are 302,304,304L,316 etc... These grades are generally determined by their Chromium and Carbon content. The wire mesh that we commonly used is most probably 302.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Do you mean that those sell in hardware shop are of lowest grade?
If they corrode, is there iron oxide in water? Does it kill the shrimps?
Thanks!!

Yea, what happens when they corrode? Do they release harmful heavy metals? :bigcry:

i wouldn't say it's the lowest grade but more of economical grade on those that are selling as aquarium mesh. :D
btw, i've missed out a point. rate of corrosion also depends on your tank water quality. specifically PH.

Unless other steels are used (e.g. mild steel which is very prone to rust), personally, I think it's harmless using stainless steel because the corrosion rate is extremely slow and barely noticable. Changing water will take care of removing extra "mineral" from the rust. :D

But its heavier, will it accumulate inside the gravel?

I guess the plants and fish poo might just take care of it.... lol

I am wondering of the leaked iron helps in getting redder shrimps?
