My story......

I was last October in Hong Kong and bought ten of this Cardinal shrimp...after a flight including homecoming of 26 hours....I arrived in Holland without loses.....

After I put this creatures in a Aqua40 tank (30 liter ) they seemed to be happy............after a long trip...

In one week time one by one died...I didn't know what the cause was and what to do..

PH was, I think 6 at that time....It crossed my mind that PH must be at least 7,5 or 8......So I made a waterchange.....

then it came to a hold......result 2 out of 10 survived.....but didn't know at that moment.....do I have a couple...a male and a female.....

So one month goes by and nothing happend....but after a waterchange a few days before christmas......I came to a conclusion that one of these 2 shrimp got eggs....( 23th of December )....So I've got a couple in my little tank.

So...after 19 days ( 11 Jan. ) I saw some shrimplets at my sponge.....I didn't know how many.....(later I counted 15 of them )....

but after she changed her "molting" she got again some eggs.....after another 19 days I saw once more new shrimplets.........

Now it's 13th of February and this morning I saw again that these female got for the third time in 9 weeks eggs...

I have a somewhat related question for those on this forum. Is anyone aware of gender change in these shrimp or in any of the other freshwater shrimp in the hobby? I ask this because there are species of marine shrimp that change sex under certain circumstances.
It seems plausible that this characteristic might be found in some freshwater shrimp as well.

To my knowledge, this does not occur with any of the known species of fw shrimp.

Hi Stuart,

I don't use any special substrate, but only standard gravel ....and that based on tapwater....mostly PH7,5-8....i think....my parameters from 29-12-2008 was

Ph 7,2
KH 6
GH >7
N02 0
NO3 0

Less plants and more stones with little holes in it....I think for the biological culture.....

once a day one pellet for feeding is enough....not more...

Hi Frank,

In the beginning I gave the couple only some spirulina ( every 3 days ) and nothing else they seems to be happy with that .....after I got some young shrimplets I gave them Sera Micron twice a week....and nothing else...

after when the group began to grow in numbers I give them ONE "staple of shrimps natural of Sera for the entire group each two days......

I see them also grazing from the rock......in my tank.....

Hi
your shrimp are fabulous, just a quick Q relating to the original post, are you allowed to bring shrimp with you on the airplane or do you need some special permission to import them, I am waiting for a certain type for months here in Ireland, and the thought crossed my mind to buy them back home (I am from holland ) and bring them back myself.
Thanks for letting me know

i travel to several asia countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore ... and this is the way to take them home. I use a small plastic bottle / or you can put a nylong into a medium size can (diameter 15 cm, height 20 cm); put is some moss for shrimp to hang over it - don't put too much since moss will produce CO2 in dark, water level is about 5-7 cm, one set put max 10 species; then, deep it in your luggage ... it works.
you can try this way, if you cannot find other solution.

could you not put it in the checked in baggage? I am not sure I will go this route but if all else fails.............. might drive over by ferry though:undecided

Sure, you can put it in checked luggage, but you might risk your luggage being "randomly" selected to be inspected. If they find your shrimp, they will probably toss it. Also, I think they depressurize the undercarriage of the plane where the checked luggage is stored; I don't know how this will affect the shrimp in a bottle. If you are adventurous and want to try, let us know how it goes!

sure, there is a risk ... we have to try our luck anyway. this is not 100% guarantee, but at least a possible way.

I might be going to Germany during the summer holidays...(looking forward :cheesy:).

Would I get myself in trouble if the shrimps are found in my luggage?
I mean I don't feel like risking some big fine just for trying to smuggle a couple of crystal red shrimp.

Some species of shrimp are hard to come across in my country so most of the time I buy my shrimp online. I would like to make the most of this trip to Germany and get some shrimp that are not availiable in Malta.

Any fish stores (that offer good quality crustaceans) you recommend I should visit in Germany.

And out of curiosity...How is it possible for me to know about members from Europe that I could contact using pm that are willing to sell shrimp?

Update...

The Aqua65 did not work out..and I replaced my group Dennerli's and Poso's to a smaller tank...Aqua40(29 litre) each species have his own tank....

Dennerli tank...16 adults....4 of them have eggs and one have already released some shrimplets....

Poso tank....I think 35 adults....five with eggs....and several had a eggspot...already.

I start to feed them 3 times a day.....crushed pellets....and with succes...there a more females with eggs and the young shrimplets grows much faster.

Hi again...

Cardinals wouldn't go for to the "food" like wafers or pellets...they eat separately, I feed my Poso wafers because they eat together, like crystal reds.

The clue is that Cardinals need powderfood....

The last 2 months I'm feeding them with...powderfood, selfmade....a mix of several algae shrimpfood....3 times a day...

This morning I saw several shrimplets....against my tank....on the Lava stones....still have 3 berried Cardinals....2 have already gave birth....

Congratulations. Where do your shrimps come from?
some tips:
i feed them 3 times a day shrimp baby food.
use warm water for a water change.
change at least 30% once a week.

good luck!

Hello Frits, Thanks for the answer! Some off my shrimps are comming from a german breeding friend, others im gonna pick up at a local fish store. I saw 3 pieces of those amazing animals in that local fihing store. Cant let them alone in that shop so i will ad them to my german group when they are adjusted to my tank water. Why from pick te shrimps up from 2 different places? Because i think i can make a stronger group from those 2 bloodlines. Correct me if i am wrong, im here to learn :) The tank where im putting this group in, exist for over 2 years now, and have a nice bio film for the saluwesi shrimps to feed on. Thanks for the tips, but with warm water you mean around 30 degrees?

There is always a risk in combining two groups.
i keep mij Cardinals at 24.5 degrees Celsius and the new tapwater for the tank is the same so there is no temperature drop.

First off all thanks for the answers. About the 30 degrees; i saw much breedign results at 28 degrees. So thats why i thought 30 was good, becuase off the heat lost when filling. Anyway i will keep my aquarium at 24 degrees then. About combining the group's; isnt it possible to take the 2 groups then let one groep get ready for the Main aquarium (By the dripping methode), and the other group to the quaranteen aquarium (again the dripping methode). Then after 30 days or so, let the quaranteen groep get ready to put in the Main aquarium, again with the driping methode. In my opnion those groups will then be prepared for each different bio culture (bacteries), wich will result in realy low lose. Just my 2 cents ;)

Hope i dont ruin your topic. Tell me when i do please :P

Ontopic: ChungCK, i didnt tell you how much i admire your shrimps. They are lovely!

Ask the breeder of your shrimps his water temperature. That is the temperature you want to start with and in time you can adjust that.
When will the new cardinals arrive?
