Seachem's Flourish Excel is considered to be one of the best suited for shrimp tanks. It provides a carbon source for plants, and is safe for shrimp if used as recommended.

This is a good suggestion, but only if you are starting a new tank. For existing tanks, it would be easier to supplement with liquid and/or dry ferts.

Flourish Excel isn't actually a fert, it's a liquid carbon supplement.

For a trace fert I use Easy Life ProFito. It has proven to be completely safe when used with shrimp, and my plants thrive on it (I also dose KNO3 and EasyLife Fosfo in 2 of my tanks, both are highly lit, CO2 driven, planted shrimp tanks).

One bit advice I would give though is, make sure you stay on top of your water changes. Especially if your tank is lightly planted, as if you don't ANY fert will build up over time, and all trace ferts contain traces of copper that can build up over time to toxic levels without regular water changes.

I currently use Pfertz brand fertilizer (http://www.pfertz.com/). I do 2 pumps per 29 gallon tank with my 25% - 30% WC every 1 - 2 weeks. I am using regular Flourite Black as a substrate in the tank.

Kind Regards,

Stuart

Hi,
I can also recommend ProFito by Easy Life. I use it for years without a problem. Anther good liquid fertilizer is Feropol by JBL. But any special fertilizer for aquatic plants and for use in aquariums should do.

best regards
