I will be going to Costa Rica in the near future, where I will have the opportunity to collect some Macrobrachium spp. (and quite possibly shrimp of several other genera, freshwater crabs, and a few assorted oddballs). Does anyone have any suggestions as regards collection techniques or the particulars of transportation?

For that matter, can anyone, for identification purposes, provide a photographic checklist of the species I am likely to encounter (especially Potimirim spp.)?

Hi Veneer, just wanted to wish you a good trip. Don't forget a pair of non-slippery aqua booties or rugged-soled boots, a first aid kit, and of course, a camera so you can share your catch with us!

Can't help much in regards to collection techniques. If they're tricky, try to outsmart them by employing the old "use their instincts against them" technique. For example, in catching water otters to be tagged or checked, they employ a specially made net and place it directly underneath them (underwater). Reason is, when they try to get away, they instinctively dive straight down - and end up right into the net. So if you see a pattern of escape they use, use it against them.

Looking forward to seeing what you find, good luck.
