View Full Version : Reason For Your Username?

Hi everyone, some of your usernames are fairly straightforward, like the person's name or reference to something aquatic. Then there are other usernames which has me going huh? I'm very curious to know the story behind your username.
I'll go first. I have multiple reasons for my username:
1.) My favorite color is blue. I like modern and industrial styles, thus, GunmetalBlue.
2.) I wanted to evoke some right-brained thinking (creative side) and felt thinking about color would do that. For instance, one might wonder, exactly what shade is gunmetal blue?
3.) I actually dislike and fear guns. It can evoke a strong response, often negative and thus gives some edge. I have to admit I was curious to see if I would be treated differently if my username evoked something to that effect; also wondered if I would be treated differently possibly being perceived as genderless or even male. That didn't work for long because I was called "bro" right away, so thus felt it only right to mention I wasn't. lol
4.) I'm embarrassed to say this, but there's a small handful of metal bands I especially enjoy listening to. :joking:
Okay, your turn! Hope you'll join in, I see interesting looking usernames on the list...
Thanks, GB

My username consists of two elements:
- Arche Noah (German translation of "Noah's Ark") and
- Nova (latin: "new")
= ArcheNova - "the new Ark"
That expresses my will (sake?) to give life a new home, just like Noah did it in former times. (I'm not religious at all, but I like the metaphor)

GunmetalBlue,
Are you also taking this opportunity to declare that you are a female ? :D
I use Red Indian naming newborns method, when I need a nick. I will look around to see what strike me, and I will use it. That day, I was eating a fruit tar. :)

Hi Matthias, I thought maybe you were into archer fish! But your metaphor is very nice and well thought out. The meaning is appropriate for one who keeps pets. :)
Hi Fruitpie, my "declaration" occurred at the outset in my very first post here. lol I've heard it said that it's tough to be in a man's world; guess I was trying to make it rough for myself. The reality is, what makes it rough is that my username is so long and pretentious-sounding that you are only the second person to have written out the whole word!

So if you had been eating a potato, you would have been Potatohead? I'm afraid I don't know what "fruit tar" is. Is it like jam? Or did you mean fruit tart? :D I thought Fruitpie might have referred to Cherry pie, as in Red Cherries.
Hey Sim, Walter and STEVESIM, you will heretofore be know as the "Lazy Bunch." :snore: :snore: :snore:
> "Thats my nickname in real. But just for my friends.
Oh I see, so I have to call you Ralf... :wry:
Actually, Ralp, the flag question is "on topic." The flags were in fact a nice touch and could possibly be reinstated in future months, but for now, it might be best to call attention to what people have in common - shrimps, rather than calling attention to our differences, though there's nothing wrong with our differences. This is really a gorgeous site graphically. Let's hope more people feel comfortable posting questions or sharing answers, if they know. :)
About the usernames, there's more names we'd like to know the reason for!

Hi Gunmetalblue,
my username is just my real name. In the past I used "dark eyes" because of my dark brown eyes but I like to address other users with a name, so I stick to my own one, too. I don't really like nicknames but they can be helpful to stay anonym. But in my case there is not need for this, here in my own forum.
Best regards
Robert

Hello Dark Eyes! Now we know your alias :curtain:. Robert, are you sure you're not part of the "lazy Bunch?" They are good company I hear lol. Kidding aside, yes, I think it's a nice policy for a forum owner to identify him/herself by name.
Some names are common enough that we could potentially end up with something like Robert1 - Robert10. So real names can be anonymous in its own kind of way (unless you have a really unusual name). Nicknames can be unique and often colorful, so I personally don't mind it. We are often told not to reveal too much info when signing up for something on the internet, so it's understandable. Some choose to sign off with their real name, and that's cool too. I generally find many people like having their own avatars which is like a personal signature, and am glad this is something this site allows, as long as it fits a size requirement. :nice:

Hi GunmetalBlue,
I use cut and paste to write your nick, it is just too long to be spelled out . :p
I won't be surprised if I choose to use Potatohead as a nick, I guess such popular nick would have been taken up in those popular web services/forums.
Sorry, it is tart, instead of tar. :embarasse
Thank for the explaining the rational behind the removal of the flag to Ralp, that is exactly what we have in mind. :)
Salamastre

My grandmother once got a Salad Master as a present. Not speaking any English, she would call it El Salamastre.
I like the sound of the word, I think it can evoke many things.
rain-
3rd Jul 2005, 02:20 AM
I've been rain- for years, - because rain is usually taken. There's lots of personal reasons for choosing the nick, but I will give you a shallow explanation. I am a girl who has lots of opposites in her, it is easy for me to be happy and sad at the same time, both genuine feelings, I am also shy, quiet, active and talkative. Rain fits me perfectly. You can cry in the rain, you can sing in the rain. Rain is many things and still, somehow, you can't quite grasp it. And you sure can't catch the rain, then it would stop being rain and would be just a puddle of water ;)
And I have loved water for as long as I can remember.
Well, I think that's about it.

Hey Potatoehead10! lol Well, I let my friends call me GB, so you'll have to continue cutting and pasting GunmetalBlue lol .
Hi Salamastre! That's a cute story. When I first looked at the name, I thought of Salamander. But when I saw it was derived from El Salamastre, for some reason I thought of El Greco the painter! Go figure. So you're right, it does evoke many things, many strange things... :beatnik:
Rain- that was a lovely answer, sounds like something read in a poetry class. And I'm glad you responded because I kept wondering about the dash after your username - it was as if I were awaiting the second part, but you haven't spoken yet. Going along with your thought process, I'm reminded of the line in the movie, "Bladerunner," the quote being "Lost... like tears in rain."
I too have loved water, and also the sun. Combined together, the textures and colors are dreamy and magical. I've seen countless moods of water. Combined with the sun, the reflective rhythms dancing off the ocean's, or a body of water's surface, are hypnotizing.

Marge, get back here young lady! You were supposed to tell us why, if you're Marge, why your username is Amber... 2461 no less (my goodness, were there really 2,460 Ambers already taken? lol ). Haha, very confusing!
Hi Phillyman and welcome to the forums; hope you enjoy your stay here. :) Your name reminds me of Philadelphia cream cheese, which in turn reminds me of cheesecake. And thinking about that yummy dessert makes me hungry! :D
