Whatīs going on with you? They are not red and white. :joking:
L46 are as shy as Sulawesi shrimps and expensive as Mosuras (depending on the quality). :)

Hi,
this species is quite expensive because they are a protected species in Brazil. Since a few years there are no legal exports of this catfish anymore. So the market depends on specimen bred in captivity.

But these little beauties get only a dozen offspring every few months and they grow rather slowly. There is also a great demand for them, so they became extremely expensive.

Before the export-stop a single specimen cost about 60Euro, now a small juvenile costs about 140Euro. But it's hard to get them at all, especially a pair. A dozen breeding pairs of them and you can give up your regular job. It's not that hard to keep or breed them, they are just slow grows with very little offspring.

regards

Robert

PS I kept for years an L260, also a Hypancistrus species. Sometimes I miss this little beauty...

There's a guy in Turkey selling them, lots of them; ten for like $5000.00 US. He used to live in Germany. Very nice pleco. I have L66 ^^

Breeding groups are very high priced but small ones are to get "cheap".
They just need some years to get sexually matured. :)
The prices from Turkey are too expensive in my eyes.

It's expensive anywhere. As much as I'd like to have some, it simply isn't worth the price (check out aquabid for asking price, too). I also feel that if I do get some, I'd be encouraging the further removal of them from the wild and the destruction of their habitat. On the flipside, if I get them, I'd be raising and breeding them in captivity, thereby reducing the need to remove them from the wild, but the demand is really high for these species, hence the high prices.

was in tokyo recently and saw one shop selling many of them (about 4 tanks), but the price is expensive, 40,000+ yen for smaller ones, 50,000+ yen for slightly bigger ones.

It seems I should step in that business. :D
No problem for me to get them.

can you keep L-numbers together with shrimps?

Jozebs
19th Jul 2008, 01:58 PM
I think the main problem with this is the water temp I keep cherry and bee shrimp in one of my zebra pleco tanks and they do really well but they are at 30oC temp which is what L046 need, the plecos completely ignore the shrimps and shrimplets so that side of it is ok

belgiumshrimplover

are there L numbers that are satisfied with lower temperatures. like 23-26°?

Jozebs

i'm sorry if i sounded ignorant but this type of fish is abundant and cheap in my country (Malaysia), we called them "vacuum cleaner" as people buy them to clean up rubbish in the tank.

a small one 2"-3" cost less than USD1. i have seen big one in some aquarium about 1 ft long (12cm), like a monster!

I doubt Zebra Plecos will run that cheap anywhere. Plus, I believe they are meat eaters, so they won't do much good cleaning up leftover rubbish.

if they are that cheap, sell me some!!!!!

I think you are getting confused with the common pleco. L046 only grow to 4"
there are hundreds of different L numbers some very very rare and expensive some a common as a cold.

Actually, there are more and more available as people started to breed the F1s.
But you are correct that the demand is off the roof as I have a waiting list of the yet to be born. However, don't let the price give you the illusion that it's easy money as it's a lot of hard work if you want to raise them to good health.
Plus, as mentioned by Jozebs, they take an eternity to grow. It takes 1/2 year for them to grow to barely 1". The upside is that they can live at least 10+ years. Some people have claim that their zebras have lived for 15+ years. Also, there is no doubt about their beauty. This is one of the best looking pleco there is.
And yes, they can live with the shrimps you guys mentioned, but their comfort temperature is 28C - 30C. For the shrimps that's a bit hot and you won't get them to colour up nicely as it's on the high end temperature for the shrimp.
