View Full Version : Did You Know Bamboo Shrimp Have "Claws?!"

Hi everyone, while sorting through some pictures, I was so surprised to see claws/nails on the Bamboo shrimp's (Atyopsis Moluccensis) legs! I guess part of the surprise comes from the fact that considering their large size, they are quite harmless to other shrimp. So I just didn't expect to see it; hmmm, wondering if I'm the only person that didn't know... The African filter shrimp (Atya gabonensis) seem to have claws/nails too.

I do know from my two Bamboo shrimp that they like to jockey for best filtering position, standing side by side and sometimes pushing at each other with their legs. It's almost as if they want to get the advantage by having their foot in front of, and over the other, much like a boxer makes sure to have their foot outside their opponent's while circling the ring. I also observed one of them on an algae covered rock actually scraping the algae with his/her claw/nail, then working the algae toward the fan, then into the mouth.

Anyone else observe any of this, or any other interesting behaviors? I do know they are good at clutching onto rocks and plants and often seem to prefer that rather than standing on the aquarium floor. They seem rather clumsy when walking around; perhaps when they walk on gravel it's a little like walking on high heels. lol

Those are fantastic pictures. I had no idea they have those little claws on their legs.

That could explain why they can grip onto things so well. When mine wants to stay put, it's impossible to pull him off. I have to tickle his tail to get him to move.

Mine spends most of the day clutching an amazon sword leaf. He can get his claws round to the back and sits on there letting the filter sway him back and forth.

Since I only have one I've not noticed any wrestling. In the shop tank I've seen them do this, nudging each other's side's while trying to get the best leg position. They seem quite assertive with their own species.

I still think they look like giant cockroaches though.

Are they harmless to baby cherry shrimp? I'm thinking of getting one to filter the fine particles of food in the water.. :)

Hi NanoDave, yes, Bamboo shrimp are completely harmless to even newly hatched shrimplets. I'm currently raising 3 batches of Cherry shrimplets with my two Bamboos. Some of the shrimplets are old enough now to jump on the the Bamboo's back to try to "clean" them, but the Bamboo shrimp usually whips her antennae like a horse might whip its tail to get rid of flies! lol But no harm done.

Although the following pics are not very clear, thought I'd add them to let you see they're okay with each other.

Shrimp soccer anyone? 3-week old Cherries guard ball (algae wafer) while Bamboo moves in. :shocked2:

The Bamboo shrimp completely misses the ball and runs over it. A juvie Cherry alights atop the Bamboo, pretending to overpower her and steer her away. :whip: So I wonder who won the game? lol

Hey GB

Those pictures are cute, they remind me of my cherries when it is feeding time, they do the same thing to the Vampire shrimps ... the boys will tolerate it for a while and then the antennae comes ... :D

Your photography skills are SUPERB! :D:D

Yeah, I do know they have claws, I realized it when they cling onto my hand that time when I handle them. Shrimps are really interesting. :D
