What type of setup are you keeping F. splach in?
F. splach. is a terrestrial moss (in fact, most mosses that we use in aquariums are terrestrial). It doesn't need high light, but it will require CO2 injection to thrive.

Fissidens requires CO2 and can't withstand the water temp over 25C.

I have Monoslenium too and it's doing quite well in tank with high light and CO2...
People have you ever been going to moss collecting to local pond, river or stream?

i have a pretty stronge light.
but if you say the CO2 injection will help it thrive then i will try it out.

If you have high light, it usually is a good idea to up the CO2. More light means your plants will grow faster and need more nutrients to support the growth, meaning more CO2.

They do great with a lot of CO2 and just medium light.... :) ~~ Not too demanding otherwise, I kept them in my shrimp tank without any dosing :)

if you dont have co2 injection then less light (1.5W per gallon) is best. For mosses, I think DIY CO2 works just fine. They aren't really needy in general.

Hi Piotr,
your Lomariopsis lineata is actually a fern. We only keep the prothallium, which is a kind of stable fern gametophyte (a very early stage in the development of the fern). So it's neither a moss nor a liverwort.

Those are some pretty impressive lists of mosses!! How do you keep them apart?
I only keep a few, Riccardia sp., Fissidens fontanus, Fissidens splachybriodes, willow moss, and flame moss. After awhile mosses tend to look the same to me and get mixed together, so I keep the ones that I feel are significantly differentiable from others.

kokon2208 -- sorry, let me clarify. I keep these mosses because they are easy to identify and don't mix easily with other mosses. All the others (e.g., Java, Singapore, Christmas, Taiwan, etc.) are too similar sometimes for my tastes and when they grow out and intermingle, it's hard to separate again. It is for this reason that I don't keep them, but do keep the ones I mentioned.

how do you grow star moss aquatically, I have never been able to get anyone to document it successfully in the long run So I have)). My hyophila runs in several tanks with different conditions. I cannot say that I was success with it because it`s been too litle time since I planted it (only 6 months). And the period of adoptation was long and hard. Now too early to say that we have one more aquatic moss at disposal, I still cannot give in the thought that it is absolutely terrestrial moss. In fact I only have some hints what it likes and go on taking experiments. Here is the picture (sorry for poor quality but better than nothing) of my Hyophila involuta. That is the dark green moss on the right side.

These are the mosses that I currently have:
Taxiphyllum alternans (Taiwan moss)
Taxiphyllum sp. (Flame moss)
Taxiphyllum barbieri (Java moss)
Taxiphyllum sp. (Peacock Moss)
Unknown (Fissidens madagascar)
Fissidens fontanus (US fissidens)
Fontinalis antipyretica (Willow moss)
Leptodictyum riparium (Stringy moss)
Crattoneurom Filicinum (Triangle moss)
Unknown (Holger moss)
These are the mosses that I used to have:
Tortula ruralis (Star moss)
Vesicularia ferriei (Weeping moss)
If anyone knows the scientific names (and also any alternative common names) for the Holger and Fissidens Madagascar I would be very happy to hear about it :)
Am happy to do swaps as well for new mosses, preferably within UK, but also within Europe. I have had bad experiences receiving moss from Asia so am not overly keen to send that far away.

For now I got, with the right ID for sure:
Riccardia chamaedryfolia, mini-pellia
Fissidens fontanus, phoenix moss
Taxiphyllum sp., flame moss
Without ID, but possible then:
Taxiphyllum barbieri, java moss?
Vesicularia dubyana, singapore moss?
Vesicularia ferriei, weeping moss?
Vesicularia montagnei, christmas moss?

Tortula ruralis is absolutely terrestrial moss and will NEVER grow submersed. Probably under the name of Star moss you have some other moss. Look at the picture above your reply. Does your Star moss look like the moss on the last picture?
If anyone knows the scientific names (and also any alternative common names) for the Holger and Fissidens Madagascar...
It is not possible to ID the mosses by their commercial names. No chance. Only if you show pictures or provide species.

Thanks Kokon,
I think that the moss sold to me under the name of tortula ruralis\star moss was a terrestrial moss. It was supplied with emersed growth (so I can not compare it to the above pic) and died when I put it in my tank.
I understand that it is not possibly to get a definite ID by commercial names.
I wonder if they are 'new' to the hobby or just new names. If I find out I will post the answer here.

On this very picture there is Hyophila involuta,
though the picture wrongly tells us that it is Tortula ruralis.
Ref. the Holger and Fissidens Madagascar, I can offer you some moss for exchange for those two. And probably when I see them, I can tell you how familiar they are to the hobby

Just a tip... Very often you can find your moss brown and looking dead. But at the same time it has a healthy "root" structure. You need to place it under a propriate condition and it starts to grow again. In that very case with Hyophila from AqMagic you should have put in on a wet ground with 100% humidity but not in water. And when it starts to grow, sink it. On the third my picture the Hyophila involuta (Star moss) from AqMagic that came absolutely brown and dead. As you can see it is green and healthy.
