Can I just add the peat in the tank?
I have it in a mesh bag right now (ones for filter media)
I'm planning on either adding the mesh bag into the tank or using a bucket of water with airstone and adding the mesh bag in there then using the water in that bucket for water changes....

Most applications of peat are not added directly to a tank, but used in filters or added in the substrate before the gravel or other media is added. It helps buffer the pH. I don't see any problems with aging water in peat before adding it to your tank during water changes. Is there a reason you want to add it to the tank directly?

No reason. I use sponge filter and not a HOB. So I cant just add it to a HOB.
I'm using it to make the water softer and lower the kh, gh, ph.

What species of shrimp are you trying to raise and what are your current water parameters?

I have CRS
PH 7.5
kh 3
gh 6-7
I just added a mesh bag of peat into the tank. I placed it right above the sponge filter so the bubbles hit the bag so flow gets through it.
