View Full Version : Would injecting CO2 only into a low maintainence tank result in a algae problem?

I had upgraded my main tank to pressurized CO2 last weekend, so now I have my DIY CO2 lying around. One option is to use it 14" shrimp tank where I am growing X'mass moss, erect moss, java fern, an unknown moss and a tiny bit of pellia. Wasn't sure if I inject CO2 into this tank, will I have to followup with regular dosing of fertilizer etc and making it a high maintainence tank? Right now, it is low maintainence with only 8 hours of lights per day and topping up of water everyday. No CO2 or fertilizer into this tank at the moment and the plants seems growing fine. Don't wish to have a algae problem if I only inject CO2 into the tank but not dosing ferts into it. :p

Personally I would leave it alone. If it ain't broke why fix it. :)
With CO2 infection you will need at least 2-3 watts per gal ( this is only a general rule, the height of your tank is also a factor ) and also you will have to dose more plant food.
If your plants and shrimps are happy then I would leave them alone. Just enjoy the benefits of a low maintance tank.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Ehh, can't endorse that fully. Can still do low light and not does with some CO2 injection. It will help some but not as much as with more light and ferts but it can be done.
In this case however, I would not bother.

I agree with gnatster. Plus, I don't want the possibility of CO2 accident killing the shrimps, hey, they happen more often than you might think.

Thanks everyone for the replies. So I proceed to empty the yeast mixture and put the bottle in the store room :D

Well, if you ask only regarding about the plants, I would say that even in a low-light tank, they certainly will love the CO2. I´ve kept a nano tank with 37 liters, and a single 15w bulb with DIY yeast CO2 for a long time and never noticed any issue about algae due to the CO2 injection
But regarding about those shrimps I am not so sure, because it will be some pH variation during the photoperiod, and personally (and unfortunately), I have few experience with shrimps in this conditions
