black freshwater coral ?

hello ! could you someone help me identify this mysterious black "coral"

Supposedly there is a semi rare freshwater macro aglae thats a red/brown color that looks similar. Many people call it a red liverwort...

Might be that?

Well, first thanks for your comments.
I dont think this is an algae or a mushroom because it's structure seems solid (haven't touched it yet). Sometimes a shrimp drops by and tries to eat it but after "tasting" it they run/swim away emediatly. They don't seem to like it that's why I thought it could be harmful maybe.

Yep, its definitely a freshwater liverwort, most of them are terrestrial species, but a few are freshwater..... Seen them at some LFS here and I think they need cool water to grow, very exotic and beautiful....:)

Don't think they require cool water to survive. Here's a red liverwort that I'm growing.

the plant your are talking about is probably an algae, no liverwort. See this thread for more information: http://www.killies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3616

What's growing there on the drift wood piece I can't say for sure. I doubt that it is a liverwort. A Mushroom or algae is more realistic. A close-up picture might be helpful.
