:bs_help: I am considering on using a chiller to cool my tank.. and am trying to gather a collective poll so as to faciliate my decision on the purchase. The types of chillers into consideration are;

a) Arctica
b) Do-It-Yourself Chillers
c) Resun
d) Teco
e) or other brands which I may not seen or know about

May you please share your experience and help clear some concerns I have;

1) What would the increase in electricity charges be per month?
2) During start up or when the condenser kick in. Is the noise really
noticeable?
3) Would the condenser generate a lot of heat?

Thanks... :)

I am using Resun for its low cost. For this brand, need a bit a luck to get carefree units, but with the low price, it worth the effort. :D

All chillers are using heat transfer, if you want to cool it lower, it will generate more heat. However, another factor come in, that is the efficiency of the compressor. TEM DIY chiller has the least efficient and it is only suitable for small tank, however, compressor based chiller is an over kill for small tank, so each has its own place.

I am using Resun too. Easy to service and get parts if break down.

I've come to know from other forums that the lifespan of Resun is about 2years. Whereas the Arctica or...'western' brands can last to about 4 years. Although the price adds up to 4 times too.

In the end, won't it be the same? In terms of purchase price.

May I know how much does servicng normally cost? Sorry, I'm quite a noob with regards to chillers... :p

Thanks for sharing your experience guys.

Hi Zapisto, I don't think Canada's temperature would go to the range of 28 -30...unless its summer. But I've not stayed there long enough to experience. :)

Here in sunny S'pore.... to maintain a temperature of 25, we would need to use a chiller most of the year. Only till around Nov and Dec do our temperatures becomes cool.

The url below shows what a chiller generally look like;

:p new members are unable to add url. Please add W W W. infront (hope the space fools the system)

Just bought a arctica chiller 1/10 hp for my 2 ft tank.
Cost around $990 from .
(under 2 yr warranty, and 2 times servicing)
It does not include the hosing and stuffs, just the chiller itself.
Electric bills was additional $30 for last month.;)

Resun is one of the cheaper brands you can find in the market. Price depending on the volume of your tank. There are feedbacks that the kick-in noise is quite loud.

How much money(USD) are we talking about for these chillers?
I have had issues with heat here in Canada during the summers as well, (lost 80 tetras during 30+ temps in July). I'm wondering if it's worth purchasing one for seasonal use.
