Has anyone grown a successful lawn of chendol grass (or utricularia sp or dragon claw) yet? I'm trying but mine are just surviving as it is. The older leaves get a lot of BBA and the new leaves are rather puny and messy.

Now I'm using a chiller to maintain about 25C, fluorish excel and easylife profito, crossing my fingers and hoping.

saw this plant in a LFS few months back..
they were nice to have for grounds deco...but advise from the shop, the best was you need a chiller to maintain it...
anyway, it was a beautiful sight of it when it grows.

Do you use CO2? Excel is about 1/3 strength of CO2 gas so you might consider DIY if gas tank is beyond you or consider lowering the light to about 1.5wpg-2wpg (max). At lower light, make sure the light is well spread and there is little shading by the plants (prune often to avoid shading).

The presence of BBA is an indicator that CO2 is lacking in almost all cases unless you are underdosing nutrients.

Oh well, if I'm not supposed to post anything remotely buy/sell like, here's an edited version that makes more sense.

I recently found out that a hobbyist in s'pore is propagating chendol grass successfully at 27 celsius using a fan. I'm not sure about the other parameters. He also said the growth is quite fast and he actually finds it easy to grow! However, the look of his chendol grass still cannot beat the look of that other famous place in S'pore where this grass was first spotted.

Hi guys,

Do you know that your chendol plant is called "Kueh Kia Chow" (Chicken Little Grass? LOL!) here and its found in abundance around our rivers which are not polluted?

Maybe you guys should take your holidays here and go hiking!!!! :) and goes home with plenty of FOC plants apart from happy memories and healthier mind and body!!!

Cheers

As accordingly to kimco, the grass grow in river bank of Malaysia, so we can know from here the temperature may not be a crucial factor. The temperature of Malaysia day time can be 30C. Does temperature make a difference when grow submerged or emerged?

I have a small amount surviving floating, it didn't grow nor die.

Does that chicken little grass have the carnivorous nodes along the leaves as well? Or does it just look very similar?

Yes it does. Will try to get some pictures for you guys to see. I thought the carnivorous nodes are tag alongs and not part of the plant! :p

FYI, the river water are very cold, probably around 23-25 degrees even during day time!

This is weird, why does "c a rnivorous" come out as "Tanknivorous"?

I also found some in Kuching. The nodes are along the stem. Trying to grow them in my tank currently. Actually there are alot of these type of plant in Singapore also.

Walked past Sam Yick Marine Parade today and was surprised that the Chendol like foreground plant is no longer in the display tank.

Given the rich and abundant growth of that plant in the tank previously, it must have been worth quite a lot of $$$$. Any idea why it has disappeared e.g. algae attack ???
